Stay at home wife?

I'm just curious and not judging.

Do any of you know a stay at home wife?  NOT a Mom...just a wife that doesn't work by choice?

I want to know what these people do all day.

Re: Stay at home wife?

  • no. I don't even know any stay-at-home moms (well, i do, a former coworker and one of my HS friends' mom...back then, she works PT now, and two girls i went to college with who i see on FB), but I think that's a factor of my geography and education level.

i assume they have really clean houses and good dinners. that's how it was for my bf in hs when her mom was basically a SAHW when the kids were in HS! Smile

  • I don't, but man, I'd love to do that.

Ken actually wants me to do this.

I imagine my day would be like this, if I were a stay at home wife.

Get up with ken around 7 or so and pack his lunch, drop him at the train.

Go to the gym (likely I'd break out my old gym routine again and spend like 2-3 hours there. that would be amazing)

Go home and clean up the house - I think I could easily spend an hour on this daily. I'd also probably do any yardwork if need be.

Make my lunch and watch some tv.

    Grocery shop.

Prep for dinner and either make it or get it about done.

Pick Ken up at train and have dinner.

    Clean up from dinner.

Watch tv and hang out with the hubby.

Also, I probably would do some volunteer work like at the library down the street or at the local schools.

  • My dream... I would have the cleanest house ever, bake all the time, volunteer for my charities/organizations, travel, have dinner cooked every night, oh the life :)

I actually do know a stay at home wife. She is working on her 2nd masters degree right now. Must be nice, and as she says, what else does she have to do. She doesn't cook, they go out to dinner almost every night. Her husband bought her cooking lessons for the two of them at a fancy smacy place, and she was offended. Oh the life she leads.... Oh and no plans for kids.

  • I kind of am since I work at a school and am off in the summer. This past summer was the first time not working (I do freelance jobs if I find them). I went to the gym and the pool almost everyday. I did some market research studies as well. I also had the house really clean and had every meal planned out for the week. It was nice but I must admit I got bored qucikly. All my friends work so I never had anyone to hangout with.

  • Yes, that's what I was thinking too.  Clean house, meals done etc.

But like Allison (BTW - Summers off don't count) I think I would be bored after a while.  I mean I do crafts and I like to read etc....but...that only goes so far.

  • I know two. One if the wife of my old boss. She is in her late 30s (he was late 50s) and they don't have any kids. From what he's told us about her, she pretty much went to their country club every day for socializing activities.

I also know a girl who is a mutual acquaintance who just ?retired? (her words, not mine) and is a stay at home wife. She is 29. I have no clue what she does. AT ALL.

    Same here.

Do you know that I look forward to the weekends so I can bake, cook and clean? However, like Jaime, I would probably get bored and feel I needed to contribute financially (that is just me). I hate having to rely on someone else financially and if I can do it on my own, I would.

I do not know any SAHW at the moment.

  • A former friend was a SAHW - now SAHM.However I think her situation is a bit different than most. In my opinion it was because of pure laziness. She quit a great job that she actually enjoyed but should have stayed at because they did need her income. Her H once said to me that it cause more than 1 issue between them... maybe thats why he cheats but thats another story Wink I know her house was clean but I also know that she doesn't cook - I think she knows how to make about 5 things and her H does most of the cooking. She mostly cleaned and sat around and trust me she isn't the type to volunteer!

I don't think I could be a SAHW - WAHW for sure! now a WAHM- though I would really like to be a SAHM it isn't in the cards! I would LOVE IT. If I could WAH I  could do what I need to and still be able to get all of my house things done.

Buuuut... if I were a SAHW I would ideally have a clean house, lots of delish meals, baked goods, and volunteer. If i were a SAHM I would have all that and be able to take B (and any future kids) to play groups and museums ect ect. That would be so ideal to me!

  • Hmmm, I can't think of any off the top of my head.  My aunt sort of is...she has kids, 1 in college, the other already graduated college but living back at home. Does that count? I have no clue what she does all day. She says she never cooks dinner anymore and is always busy. I know for a fact that she's not cleaning all day.

I am a bit of a stay at home wife during the winter.  My job is seasonal and we just closed this past Saturday.  However, every day since I've been working at my other job at the farm.  This won't be a regular thing though (usually only 1 day a week). This is my first year at this job, so I can't tell you from experience, but these are my plans: I have a lot of fudge/cookies/candy to make before Christmas so I'll be doing a lot of that. Tomorrow I plan to address and mail all of our Christmas cards. I have gifts to wrap. The house needs a good thorough cleaning, too.  After Christmas I'm not sure what I'll do.  I have plans to do laundry during the week so it doesn't take over our weekends anymore, cook more often.  I'll also be going to the barn 3-5 days a week to ride.

My job starts back up the 2nd week of April.

  • My best friend has been a SAWH in the past (and is currently a SAHM)... she never watches TV and is extremely active. I always got annoyed when she said she didn't have time to do this or that. She cleaned, cooked, laundry/ household chores, belonged to groups and was active in the community.
  • I do not know anyone who does this, however I have thought about all the things that I would do if I could do this.

I have all these ideas to make my own pasta (noodles, ravioli, etc), bread, and things that I can make better for us than packaged food (i.e. pop tarts, granola bars, etc) but don't have the time to (or the freezer space).  I envision my day somewhat like Claire's.

I would probably want to develop a business that I could work from home with...just have to decide what "hobby" I want to make into a job.

  • I know 1.  We don't talk often but we went to high school together.  Her husband wanted her to be a SAHW so she quit her job.  She said she basically keeps the house clean, cooks, and has sex (her quote, not mine =).

I personally could not be a SAHW.  I never thought I wanted to be a SAHM, but after Annie was born I begged DH to let me quit my job.  I think working part time would be ideal for me.
