PW: Remember me asking about winter?

Well here's my story for today:

This morning was supposed to be my first day at my new job. I didn't have to in until 10 but because it was snowy and gross outside I decided to leave at 0845 for a 25 minute commute.

I drive a 4WD Ford Edge (which I have been told is winter safe) Well, when I was around two blocks away from my work, I slid on the snow and rear ended another car. I was going about 5 MPH so there wasn't much damage.

When this woman got out to talk to me I saw a carseat in her back seat. SHE HAD A BABY IN THE CAR! OMG, I was more hysterical than her. Thank God her and her LO were both okay. Her car had some bumper damage and mine had a few tiny scratches.

:sigh:...longest day EVER!

Cookies if you made it through that!

  • OMG, I'm glad everyone was okay!  That's scary.

  • That's really scary :(  I'm glad everyone's ok!

I'm sure your car IS "winter safe", it's just hard to learn how to handle driving on ice/in snow when you're not used to it.  You'll figure it out soon, I promise!

  • Oh no! I'm glad nobody was hurt!

As far as winter driving goes, you just have to get used to it. I used to drive a tiny awd subuaru impreza through the snow and had no problems - actually sometimes the heavier cars like SUVs are harder to control because once they start sliding there is more weight to keep them going. My advice is to go to an empty parking lot one night after it has snowed or has a little ice on it and just drive slowly and practice braking and turning so that you get used to the feeling of sliding a little and how to control the car when that happens. That's what my dad did with us when we got our licenses.

That's a really good idea.  I took driver's ed/learned to drive in winter so I learned it from the get-go.  It definitely helps to practice.

  • Hmm, that's a great idea. Now all I need is an empty parking lot...and maybe a crash helmet! lol
