Kindle questions!

Hi ladies!

Do any of you have a Kindle? I'm interested in getting one and would love to hear your thoughts on it...I know there are others like Nook and eReader. There are so many gadgets out there, and I'd like to get something that's worth the money!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Kindle questions!

  • I just got a Kindle, and while I like it a lot, if I had purchased it (it was a gift) I would have gotten the Nook.  I like the idea of being able to get books from a variety of locations, and with a discount if I buy from B&N since I'm a B&N member.  I also like that you can "lend" books to friends with the Nook.  My local B&N has classes on how to use the Nook every Saturday at noon, which I also find pretty cool.  There's a Nook desk set up so you can ask questions anytime, which I'm sure they have at all B&N.
  • I just saw a post on Kindle vs. Nook on the MM board.  Most posters preferred the Nook for the same reason as Amy -- it uses the standard ebook file type and you can borrow ebooks from the library.

    Apparently the Kindle is going to have this feature soon.

    I just read an awesome review on amazon that compares the Nook and the Kindle.  It's actually the first review on the page for the Kindle and it's VERY thorough.  Here's a couple things he mentions that might interest you:

    "* ePub

    Nook uses the ePub format, a widely used open format. Amazon uses a proprietary ebook format. Many libraries will "lend" ebooks in the ePub format, which works with nook but not kindle. However, a free and reputable program called Calibre allows you to translate ebooks from one format to another - it supports many formats, including ePub and Kindle. The only catch is that it doesn't work with copy-protected ebooks, so you can't, for example, buy a Kindle book (which is copy protected) and translate it to ePub so you can read it on a Nook.

    * lending e-books to friends

    Nook owners can "loan" ebooks they purchased to other nook owners for up to two weeks. You can't do this with kindle - yet. Amazon has announced it will soon add this lending feature to all kindles (via a software update that will be available to people who already own kindles)."

    I suggest reading the reviews on amazon because even though it's an amazon product, a lot of people give really good reviews comparing the Kindle and Nook.  HTH!
