Buying a home: should I shampoo the carpets?

We are buying a home that is 6 years old, and has had 2 previous owners.  The carpet is in good shape, but I dont know when it was last cleaned.  I want to get the carpets shampooed before we move in, but then I think they are just going to get dirty when we move in.  It is snowing here, and it will probably just get worse as the month goes on.  So would you wait until after the move, or do it before?

  • i would do it before you move everything in, and then if its snowy/wet outside just lay cardboard or plastic (taped down) in the walking paths to protect it. thats what we did.

Ditto this. This what the moving company did moving us. Big moving boxes laid flat make great walkways, and if you're using a dolly to move anything work really well for that as well as protecting your clean carpets.

  • Ditto PPs about having them cleaned before and trying to protect them with cardboard or plastic. Also, some companies give discounts for homes with empty rooms.

  • Home Depot rents a professional carpet cleaner for less than $25 for 24 hours - works great!!!  We've done it several times since we moved in. Best wishes and congratulations on your new home!

  • I'd do it before so you don't have to move furniture.

We have a Hoover Steam Vac. You could do it before and after if you have one. Just do the whole thing now, and then do the high traffic areas later.

  • Thank you, pickledvm, for the Home Depot thing. I was wondering about this as well since we are going to be moving into a new place next week....and besides, it's only $18 to use the carpet cleaner for 4 hours! I don't think I'l need it for more than that.
