Need help removing scratches!!

DH and I are remodeling/gutting our house, and we just (2 weeks ago) installed our new microwave. Monday night I was cleaning the cooktop and microwave (to keep them looking new) and when I was done, realized that I had managed to completely scratch the microwave keypad beyond belief. It looks horrible.. the entire thing is scratched and blurred. I can't figure out how it happened because I used a new, clean sponge, that only had water on it, and I wash the stove digital controls (same material, same manufacturer as the micro) all the time and have never scratched them.

Please help! A co-worker suggested lemon Pledge.. she heard this from someone else, and isn't sure why it has to be lemon, or if it even works. Has anyone heard of this? Is there anything else I could use? I'm so worried about making it worse!

Is there a layer of plastic film over the controls that you're supposed to peel off once you install the appliance?

A regular sponge will not scratch anything and please don't use Pledge.  It does nothing to fill scratches.

No, the protective coating had already been taken off... we aren't sure what caused the scratches.. DH is convinced there must have been something on the sponge, but I swear it was completely clean. Either way.. the scratches are there and it looks horrible... we need to do something about it.

  • I don't know of anything that can "remove" scratches from plastic. Pledge won't do anything (lemon scented or not)... it's just a lame wood polish. Feel free to try it, but it will just make the keypad shiny and streaky.

If you can't live with the scratches on an otherwise perfectly fine microwave, then I think you're in the market for a new microwave. Make sure you drop the scratched one at a Salvation Army type place instead of throwing in the trash. Someone out there will be thrilled to have a brand new microwave with a scratched keypad.

  • Check your manual. Call the manufacturer to see if they have any suggestions. You may have to order a new keypad covering.
