Help me understand the Wikileaks thing
I've been hearing so much about a scandal with the owner (or CEO?) of Wikileaks. I don't even know what Wikileaks is.
All I know is Hilary Clinton "verbally slapped" them in the face and they retaliated by posting sensitive info about the government on their website. Then the owner (or CEO) is in custody now for sexual assualt?
Can anyone help me understand how this all went down? I'm confused!
Re: Help me understand the Wikileaks thing
WIKIleaks "Publishes and comments on leaked documents alleging government and corporate misconduct."
From what I've heard (which isn't much, so this is with a grain of salt) things that have been leaked could put strained relations between us and certain nations and jepoartdize national security.
The man in question, Julian Assange, is the editor in chief of WikiLeaks. As CarFar said, this website publishes "leaked" government documents and other information from anonymous sources. The site has been in existence for quite a few years now.
However, recently, they came into a number of classified documents (called "cables") from the US Department of State which discuss relations with foreign countries and leaders (including commentary about "quirks" of foreign leaders). There were documents pinpointing global sites that are extremely high risk targets (and how they could affect the US and the rest of the world if damaged or destroyed). There were documents talking about confidential (and controversial) negotiations with foreign countries and leaders. There were documents detailing the underground habits of world leaders (including a Saudi Prince who likes to have lavish, secret parties with moonshine and prostitutes).
Concurrently, Julian Assange was recently arrested in the UK* on allegations that he raped, molested and sexually coerced two women. This case originally popped up in August when these two women went to authorities to say that they had engaged in consensual sex with Assange, but that he had refused to wear a condom despite their protests otherwise. They also complained that he refused to get an STD test. But (seemingly) suddenly those charges have been upped to "rape", molestation", and "sexual coercion". There has been speculation that this was done A) to embarrass him (because such charges could be very damaging), and
because this may make it easier for the US to have him extradited here for it's own charges (possibly of espionage, although the US Government is still deciding how to proceed).
* Edited to change his place of arrest to the UK from Sweden
From what I have been hearing on the news is that this isn't accurate. In fact, in Sweden if the sex is consented but the condom breaks it is considered 3rd degree rape. So that is what happened in case 1, and in case 2 she is alleging that after stalking him and seducing him for a one night stand he raped her the next morning while she was sleeping in.
okaaay... so that's what they're calling it these days, is it?
this is the kind of thing that makes cases where women actually are raped hard to prosecute.
Really? We must be consuming very different media because I'm not seeing that at all in what I read and listen to, including the LATimes and NPR.
Edit: Lolo, go to LaTimes.com and do a search for wikileaks. Lots of stories there.
there is lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth about how could they have found this out, rather than what the information contained w/in might mean. did you see wolf blitzer on cnn? he might as well have been the whitehouse press secretary for all the righteous indignation he had (not about what the leaks contained, but that they happened at all).
Yes, I run far away from cable TV news, regardless of channel.
Well, except for the Daily Show of course! LOL.
That's not news, so it's OK.
