So going on hour 4 now, one of our freeway interchanges in downtown Milwaukee has been shut down.
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies have shut down a
freeway as deputies attempt to get two suspects out of a stolen SUV.
A huge backup ensued after I-94 westbound was shut down near 25th
Street. Armored cars were surrounding the car, and tactical officers
were shining a light on the SUV, which has tinted windows.
I-94 eastbound had also been shut down as of 7:45 am.
The standoff began at about 4:00 a.m. Friday morning. By 7:00 a.m., authorities called the situation "contained," but guns were still drawn on the people in the SUV.
Authorities said that they were going to take their time with the situation for the needs of safety for everyone involved.
TODAY'S TMJ4's Jay Olstad reports that authorities were using megaphones to tell the people in the car to get out of the car, to "please talk with us."
The people in the SUV have communicated with authorities. According to William Brown of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department says that the people in the SUV had not made any demands as of 7:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Authorities had dogs on the scene to assist their work.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department's Aisha Barkow told Newsradio 620 WTMJ that they had shut down all ramps of the Marquette Interchange.
People normally traveling in both directions of I-94 were given alternate routes to use.
Southbound I-43 was also shut down at Highland Avenue. It has now been re-opened.
Hundreds of drivers were stuck from as far back as the interchange, and some drivers were choosing on their own to turn around and exit the freeway.
By 7:00 a.m., authorities were able to get most of the stuck vehicles out of the area.
Clybourn Avenue was shut down for a short time as well because of the tactical situation.
Brown told TODAY'S TMJ4 that deputies had checked out the car as a traffic stop, and then when they discovered it was a stolen car, the tactical situation began.
At least eight squad cars were near the tactical stiuation.
He observed that some people had turned off their cars and were sleeping during the tactical situation.
Marquette University officials told Newsradio 620 WTMJ that despite the tactical situation being so close to the campus, classes were operating as usual.
