Ok here are the facts:
Wedding is in Ohio next Saturday (read: BRRRRR). Hubby is a groomsman and they are wearing tuxes. Invitations say "formal". Ceremony is in afternoon followed by a break and evening reception.
SOOO MIL and I are totally at a loss as to what to wear. A dress, obviously, but that's all I've got. I kinda want to wear a long black dress (anyone who remembers my "what do I wear to the opera??" fiasco may recall this) since I'll be freezing my Floridian tail off, but I don't want to be the only one other than the bridesmaids in a long dress. It seems like formal doesn't mean what it used to, especially with the ceremony in the afternoon!!! The other question is whether it's totally psycho to wear a less formal dress to the ceremony and then change for the reception.
DH can't really ask the groom because he's clueless as far as these things go, and I don't want to bother the bride!
So, vote and explain:

Re: Wedding attire help needed over here!
I said long dress all day - you can really dress up or dress down a long dress so I'd just bring accessories for both and change if you feel out of place. You will be super glad to have a long dress anyway! I lived in Ohio for 4 years and people do wear long dresses or skirts to church in the winter, I don't think you'll feel out of place at all.
Alternatively, those full wool skirts that go just below the knees are super cute and can also be dressed up or down.
