Another CD Question - Stains

I feel like I'm doing something wrong with the wash. Dipes he has worn one time are stained. I have a dry pail, do a cold rinse with a ton of water and then do a wash on hot with Rockin Green. I haven't put them in the sun yet. I don't have a clothesline so I was going to lay them out on something in the snow.

Does it sound right that they would be stained after one wear? I mean...he poops but it isn't THAT bad.

Re: Another CD Question - Stains

  • Yeah, staining does come with the prefold territory.  Not so much with bum genius because it's not a natural fiber, but they do seem to stick to the cotton.  I wouldn't worry too much about it; I never sunned, just occasionally bleached them.

  • The BG are really stained too. They don't stink at all so I know they are getting cleaned...just yellow!

  • Hit them with some bleach occasionally also, but otherwise don't worry about it.  It sounds like you're doing everything right, and in the end, they're for poop-catching :)

  • I am not the best to answer this... since I figure they are diapers... and as long as they are catching the pee and the poop I don't care what they look like...  but I agree with Megan, a little bleach and maybe "rock a soak" every once in a while to see if that helps... but I would say as long as they smell clean and are working... I wouldn't worry about it :)

  • Newborn poop, as I recall, was pretty stainy yellow stuff.  I had the benefit of both a clothesline (which we primarily purchased for cloth diaper purposes) and a summer baby.  It is amazing what the sun will do for diapers you think are just too foul to use any more!  If we ever see the sun again, I'd say give 'em a day with some UV and you'll see positive results.

  • I agree that it isn't a big deal, but the sun can help a lot! We have a clothes line and I hung his diapers out all summer and hardly had any staining. Now that I am hanging them to dry inside I can definitely see a difference.

  • I found that some diapers took 2 washes to get all the stains out.  I didn't put them in a second time, but noticed the next time I put them together they were back to their original color. Oh and I think you can get somewhat of the same effect by laying the diapers near a window so they get some sun.  Not as strong obviously, but I've heard it still helps.
  • I've read on the CD board that you can put them out on a cloudy day and still have the same effect of sunning because its a certain type of UV ray that gets them out.

This probably sounds gross but, when she poos, I dunk and then run them under hot water in the sink.  I also use an old toothbrush and kinda scrub a little before they go in the pail.  It doesnt take long and of course I wash my hands with soap after.

I do this with both my BG and my Huggabunz and no stains ever.  Even after blueberry filled poo :)
