Accordian file alternative?

So I need a new way to organize bill stubs, receipts, warranties. birth certificates, and the like. I have 3 accordian files that are just not working for me anymore... and I really don't want to get a file cabinet. Are there any other easy-to-use options?

Re: Accordian file alternative?

  • Get a fireproof safe for birth certificates and SS cards.

Consider if there's anything you"re keeping thar should just be tossed (bill stubs? most receipts?)

File cabinets don't have to look like file cabinets, they can look nice

You could also have them on a rolling frame if you have somwhere to tuck it away. Or just get a plastic file box.

  • I use 2 plastic file boxes and just store them in the closet.

  • I have a fire-proof safe for all the important stuff (birth certificates, car titles, tax papers, etc).

For everything else (bills, receipts, etc), I use a shoebox labeled with the year.   A few months into the new year, I put the whole box into the recycling.

    I have one of these.

However, once a bill payment has cleared, there's really no reason to keep the bill itself.

Whenever we were remodeling our bathroom, receipts were brought home and immediately scanned onto the computer. It's so much easier to print them and make returns than search through a bag of leftover plumbing crap to find the right receipt.

  • I know you mentioned an alternative to the accordion file, but that is exactly how I store receipts (and how I keep a timely way of purging them).

The 12-month coupon-sized accordion file has been a life-saver for me! When I write my receipts into my check register (because I'm too traditional NOT to write them down) I need a place for them to go. So they go to the receipts accordion file.  They stay organized by month, so if I need to return something I bought, I know where to find it.  They stay there for a year. After a year, the cycle has been completed, and if I haven't needed that receipt in a year, I probably won't need it ever again, and I shred them. This has REALLY stream-lined the process for me and prevents the piles and boxes of receipts, which don't work for me. :)

Receipts for bigger items (appliances, home improvement, car repair, etc.) get stored with the warantees, manuals, etc.

    GL!
