Attn: Runners - How did you get started?

Hi everyone!  I'm a lurker for the most part but believe there are quite a few runners on the board.

I'm looking into running and hitting up a half marathon or two after some good training.  I'm really starting from square one, completely out of shape after having a baby this past year.

How did you get started?  Any good resources to tap into on the internet or groups that are in the Bay Area (South Bay)?  I've heard it's good to set an initial goal of being able to run for 30 minutes before starting actual marathon training??

Re: Attn: Runners - How did you get started?

  • Hi!

I see you're in San Jose- you should definitely check out my running club:  South Bay Track and Trail

It's for all levels (we have beginners join all the time).  Our coach is amazing, he's knowledgeable, helpful, and invests time into each individual.  We mainly meet on Tuesday nights for track workouts and Saturday mornings for "long" runs (whatever "long" happens to be for you that week... it's widely varied), as well as smaller group runs throughout the week, whenever you can make it.

As far as how *I* got started, I worked my way up to a 5k first, then a 10k, then I started working up to half marathons.  At that point, I decided I needed some training help, so I joined this group.  Some people choose the Couch to 5k program because it's a website that you can use to train yourself (and it's quite effective, from what I hear) or another group like Team in Training or San Jose Fit.

If you're serious about training for a half, I recommend these things:

    - Get properly fitted for running shoes.  Go to a RUNNING store (not Sports Authority or Sports Basement, etc... Running Revolution in Campbell is outstanding for fittings) so you can make sure you're getting the right shoe.  You don't have to pay a fortune, but do not buy discounted ($30) running shoes.  Make the initial investment.

    - Buy a few decent running bras.  They're pricey, but you'll be sorry if you don't.  This is not something you need to be fitted for, but I recommend buying a few types and running in them- you'll quickly figure out your favorite.

    - Water, water, water is your friend when you start training.  So are protein and carbs.  You'll be VERY hungry when you start running regularly- fill up on protein to help keep you from overeating.  Peanut butter is my top choice.  :)

    I hope that helps!

  • I was a runner off and on for 4 years but only running occasionally for fitness. I started training for a half marathon in 2008 and the bug bit me. I joined Team In Training, ran the Nike Women's half in Oct 2008 and have been running ever since. Well running up until I got the running blues but now I think those blues are gone. I'm training for a half marathon in March.

  • MsPurple gave great advice!

I also highly recommend the Couch to 5K program. It takes a lot of the 'guess' work out. It's your own personal coach. It's great. The downloadable podcasts even give you the music and someone talks you through it. My DH did it and he went from not being able to run a minute at a time to do doing a 5k (3mi) and even a 4-5 mile run.

    :)

  • Ditto pps suggestions.  I joined forces with some awesome women in my boot camp class to train for two half marathons this year (we're also doing at least two of them next year as well).  For someone who doesn't really like to run having a group to run with made all the difference.

We used Hal Higon's training program - http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm (sorry don't know how to make it clicky).  His site has great advice on training for runs of all distances as well.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you ladies for the tips!  This is extremely helpful and I may be seeing you out at that South Bay group come January!

For sure!  And our coach is great about letting people "try out" the group before committing- he'll invite you to show up to a run and get a feel for it so you know what the workouts are like (especially the track workouts).

By the way, your newborn pic is KILLING ME.  So cute.  Who is your photographer?  Do you have more pics that I can see?  I've been browsing newborn photos lately and the picture you have is EXACTLY what I would like when our newborn comes...

Good to know about being able to try it out first!

And thank you!  Taylors 7 months old now so I should update but I just love that photo.  The photographer is Ashley Forrette (http://ashleyforrette.com/).  She's now based in Oregon but used to be based here and LA so she does come down for weddings here and there b/c she had a good client base here.  We were able to coordinate with her and make it happen!  I tried to use her for Taylor's six month shoot but she wasn't going to be in the area any time soon so it sounds like she might be doing less and less here.  She does amazing work though!

I sent you a PM about my FB album that has more pics from that shoot. =)
