A bizarre sight...

Today my mum and I took Lucie for a walk and we smelt this nasty stench.. walked by this house and had to walk back and do a double take - there were deer antlers sticking out of what looked like a turkey deep fryer and they were smoking! I'm not sure if it was someone trying to get the antlers off the head (I have no idea how one would do that) or if they were cooking it to eat but it wasn't what you expect to see on an afternoon stroll around the neighborhood!

Re: A bizarre sight...

  • How weird!!!  I've never seen something like that, and I lived in the mountains for 5 years!

  • I wish I would have had my camera on me to document it! Oh well, maybe I'll see it again another day!
  • Full mounts on the wall are expensive when taken to a taxidermist.  I'm talking about the ones that look like the deer in real life.  Sometimes, when it isn't a big deer, they will do partial mounts... meaning they are just the skull and antlers.  To do this, all of the hair, flesh, insides, everything have to be cleaned off so not to rot.  One way of doing this is by boiling the head in water and borax to break everything down. Yes, it smells, but way better than rot, unless they waited too long to do it...

Maybe that is what they were doing?

  • Oh, and to get antlers off the head you have to cut them off, usually with a portion of the skull cap.

Sorry if I grossed any one out! =)

No grossing out here!  We have our share of elk antlers around here...even have a lamp made of out them.  Smile  And Satchel has a deer antler as a chew toy (they hold up forever and don't smell).  I've just never seen anyone actually going through the process of all that!
