40th Wedding Anniversary

What would you get an older couple for their 40th wedding anniversary?  It's the ruby year, and I'd love to get them something really nice, but can't think of anything!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 40th Wedding Anniversary

  • gift certificate to a restaurant because I'm thinking they are probably in the scaling down stage of their life...my IL's had theirs a few years ago and really, the last thing they need is a beautiful vase or something like that
  • For my parents' 40th, I acted as a travel agent for them and set up their trip to Las Vegas. As a gift, I got them tickets to a show there. Like a PP said, they are scaling down and I didn't want to get them any stuff.

  • Those are some good ideas.  I was going to do a gift card for Christmas.
  • I agree with PPs. For my parents' 40th, we planned a family weekend to NYC (they picked the location). Did all the usual stuff--a show, nice dinner, visits to a museum, etc.

  • What I think is great if you can swing it financially:

A weekend mini vacay for the 2 of them -- find somewhere they like to go, even if it's a relatively close shore resort.

  • Yes, if you can afford it, a trip.  Maybe a bed and breakfast weekend getaway that is within driving distance.

  • I used to know a couple that had been married a long time.  Every once in a while they would grab a couple of bottles of wine pack an over night bag and hop in the car.  They would pick a direction and drive about an hour.  After an hour they would look for a hotel/motel that had a restaurant in the building or next door and check in.  Nothing fancy just a weekend away.

I agree with PP about not getting them "stuff" they have enough at this point.  Do they drink? A bottle of red wine could stand in for the ruby.

  • I was also thinking, if they like wine, a good bottle or two of red wine would be a great "ruby" gift!
