NER: Recommend a Mexico vacation
I need some recommendations for destinations/hotels in Mexico. I'm starting to plan a group trip we are going to take with 4 friends this summer. I was wanting to go to Cancun, because I love the archaeological/historic stuff. I would love to see ruins. But, if that's going to be a bad time for Cancun, or if you have some other must see Mexico vacation, please recommend. We are shooting for August. The friends are wanting to go the all-inclusive rout, which I am fine with, but I personally don't want to sit at the hotel the whole time.
I've never been to Mexico, so I have no experience at all, please share your opinions!
Re: NER: Recommend a Mexico vacation
I didn't go through anyone. We got a recommendation from our dive shop (which I got a rec for from diving forums), and rented it directly from the ex-pat who owned it. Then it weirdly turned out that the owner of the house was from Denver and went to the same stylist I do. Small world!
I meant to add that there are some ruins on Cozumel. Not a ton, but enough if it's just a passing interest.
I second the Palace Resorts recommendation. We went to the Moon Palace in Cancun around early May 2005 and spent every day off of the AI. Just do a lot of the excursions and you will rarely be on the resort. We did the ruins, some boating stuff, and snorkeling.
I got a great deal on cheapcaribbean.com and I highly recommend stalking that site.
The cleaning lady that was part of the really cheap rent.
And the people at the restaurants when we went out for dinner. But, we were friends/family who'd all cooked together on a regular basis, so it was something we knew we enjoyed already rather than being a chore. Visiting grocery stores in foreign countries is something I do for fun anyway.
Ditto Mr.P.
AIs are actually really cheap for what you get. We went to Crowne Plaza Grand Faro for $1600 including airfare for four nights, for the two of us. I found a deal on Orbitz for a free night. The Palace resorts are larger and have a ton of activities and different stuff to do. We stayed at Aventura and only left the property one day for an excursion. Of course, I have an unnaturally high tolerance for spending several days in a row lounging by a pool.
We've been to Cancun Palace several times. The last time we went was in June 07 and we were disappointed because there were too many kids since it was summer. In the past we went in October.
My TA has since been to the Sun Palace which is adults only in Cancun and she loved it.
Overall though I do love the Palace Resorts. And there are plenty of excursions in Cancun to do.
we spent our honeymoon last july all around the yucatan. it was hot as hell, but bearable as long as we were near water, lol. we spent most of our time in and around playa del carmen and tulum with a side trip to chichen itza.
tulum was our absolute favorite. touristy, but with a totally kick-back vibe, lots of funky boutique hotels, a gorgeous beach and some fun nightlife. we stayed here and loved it: http://www.anayjose.com/
