I'll try to keep this short...and probably will fail.
As I've mentioned before, Jeff got knee surgery on Thursday. I took Thursday and Friday off to stay with him. However, he's in a lot more pain and is a lot less mobile than expected - he is now at the point where he can get off the couch without my help, but it's really painful for him.
I was going to have to take off work tomorrow afternoon to take him to his first PT appointment, but since he's improving so slowly I'm considering just taking the whole day off. He feels bad that I've taken so much time off, and will still have to take time off for future doctor appointments later this week and next, so he wants me to leave him alone tomorrow morning even though it will hurt him to get off the couch to use the bathroom and get food, etc.
I get what he's saying, but I don't want him to be in more pain than necessary, especially since it could hinder his healing or even cause rejection of the ACL reconstruction. My job doesn't involve formally taking time off, and I know that my boss would tell me to take as much time as I need, but at the same time I don't want to take off more than necessary and there are things that I would like to get done - there's nothing that can't be put off, but the more I put off, the longer it takes to graduate. I can do some work from home since I need to write a thesis proposal, so it's not a complete waste. It's more about looking bad to my boss, honestly.
Would you stay home Monday morning, even if your husband told you not to and you knew you'd be taking a few half-days in the near future? Or would you stay home so that he would be in less pain, potentially heal better, and because you're already taking off that afternoon, anyway? Any other thoughts?
This will be a post-and-run, but I'll check back perdiodically.
Re: Time Off WWYD
I know that if I went to work, I'd be pretty pointless worrying about DH and calling/texting to check on him. I would go ahead and take the whole day, work on what you can at home and just be there for him.
Plus, if he's like most men (no offense to them) but they refuse (or don't like) to ask/accept help so I'd just be THAT stubborn and stay home to help. But do what is best for you and for him. GL!
Because of the proximity to the holidays, etc., I'd take the full day and as many days as I needed ESPECIALLY if you can work on your thesis proposal (no small undertaking) from home. Everyone around here (my office) seems to be dodging in and out throughout the day since they need to go to the post office/kids' holiday parties/etc. I fully expect the office to be a ghost town next week (out of 40 people, I think only 4 or 5 are in the office for Xmas and NY week).
Just my $0.02.
I love my puppy ... and my husband, I swear!
exactly. I agree with JRS. NO one should be working around this time anyway.
Also, unless you already have a experiment trial that you can knock out, already scheduled for the afternoon, I can't see how much it will delay your thesis
Stay home with your man.
Besides, one of the perks of a RA position is the flexible schedule.
