Went to Gary Danko

DH got a GC for GD (haha) so we made a reservation and went last night. It was fun! Took about three hours to eat dinner though. We thought we could make a movie afterwards, no way!

It's quite an experience, all that great service and fawning.  Such a nice group of staff. The food was good too although I got overly full, lol. We were late too and they didn't give us any problem about it.

What did everyone else think that has been there?  I could not believe we had a 5:30 reservation and we didn't leave until almost 9.

Re: Went to Gary Danko

  • I took DH ther for his 30th birthday. He loved it. Not my favorite restaurant in SF. It is an experience, and a staple of fine dining in SF.

We had an amazing experience in which hte jack ass fat ass 60 year old man with his cute 30 year old foreign gf (French maybe) ended up hating me (the man) and moving across the restaurant as soon as the first table opened up. Though he did say it wasn't because of me.

    Why? What happened?

  • Yeah, what happened?

    Amy, what did you eat?

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • ok... but I am warning you, I am sure this is going to be long.

So the man with much younger girl was a total... pig. He actually even looked like one with a big read face (forgot to say he was pretty large and clearly thought he was god's gift but it was obvious to I think everyone else that he just must have money).

So I had ordered the frog legs, cause how many opportunities do I have to eat frog legs? And she had commented on how she loved frog legs (so she started the convo with another table). So then she orders wine, which HE insists upon trying before she can try it, and then sends it back because she wouldn't like it. That was step one... that was kinda like WTH? This isn't your two year old daughter, this is your date.

So then we go about our business, and she gets the risotto which had seafood, stinging nettle, and mushrooms.  She gobbles it up. On the return her and the waiter make small talk about how she must not have liked it at all ha ha, laughs, and she asks what the seafood was... she explained a piece of seafood, and the man pig interrupts and says that was the stinging nettle. The waiter says no that was (I think squid) and the man looks at the waiter as if he is stupid and says no, that was the stinging nettle, in which I can't handle it anymore, and interrupt and said no the stinging nettle was the green in the risotto... it is wild green similar to other leafy greens, when uncooked it has thorns that can sting you. The man was seething, NO it was the seafood, and the waiter say, no I'm sorry sir she is right, it is a green. To which Brian said well, actually it starts out as a fish, and then crawls up onto the land and plants it's butt in the dirt and grows into a leafy green... so you are both right. The man started to agree before realizing what he was agreeing to, and then told Brian he must think he was quite hte smart ass. The woman btw was quite amused. They then spoke in French for the remainder of the time with us, and then, as quickly as possible moved across the restaurant, but again, it had nothing to do with us or the stinging nettle.

  • Well that sucks. We had lovely neighbors, and you do get a little chummy sitting so close. I was asking my Dh what Branzini is and the guy next to me answered, haha! He had just asked the server. the people on my right were just like my parents, it was killing us. Imagine a Seinfeld mother NY accent, "well I'll have the beet salad and you get the risotto and we'll share" and "I was going back and forth between the lamb and the duck, and I have to say I was a little disappointed with the duck. I should have had the lamb". Anwway I had:

Foie gras with carmelized red onions.

French pumpkin soup with a crabcake like thing, creme fraiche and something else?

Lemon pepper duck (I do agree this was just so-so) and then this other shredded duck hash with carmelized pear and cardomom, that was super yummy with some spinach.

Chocolate souffle for dessert. with mint tea. MMMMMM. yummacious.

Ha, I can totally picture the Seinfeld mom (I'm guessing George's mom) saying that! I've never even heard of this place. Sounds yummy though.
  • OMG, they were complaining about the meal to the server at the end. "the duck was a little too peppery" etc. I am sure they know what they are talking about , but it's dinner people! Not a major career decision. Just cracked us up.

  • Love Gary Danko's.

I took DH there for his birthday a couple years ago and the staff were really tops. It had to make the reservation two months in advance, but it was worth it.

We ran into DH's friend from high school there with his girlfriend and they rearranged our tables so we could sit together.

They also gave us free appetizers with caviar because our tables weren't ready right on time (they were only about 5 minutes behind).

The food was delicious for the most part (I had a couple things I would have changed) but I had a great time. It also turned out my husband's friend's girlfriend was a bit drunk and she started getting louder and kind of embarrassing (I had never met her before) and the staff never asked us to be quiet once or made us feel bad for having a good time at dinner. So for an upscale restaurant the atmosphere was not stuffy at all.

Our reservation was at around 9 and we were the last people in the place after midnight so it was a long dinner. They sent us home with an engraved wine key, two breakfast cakes and a set of custom soaps (the kind they used in their bathroom) as a parting gift.

Supposedly their brasserie is opening soon. I keep driving by waiting to see if it's up and running but so far nothing.

Next up on my list is Coi.

  • I would love to try it sometime. Sounds like fun...

yeah, I was really impressed by how it was very relaxed and not stuck up feeling. They gave us one extra app and one breakfast muffin but we didn't get any soap. I guess we didn't drink enough :)
