Ugh!

So Anabel and I were in a car accident on Friday when we were headed up to my parents house in NH.  I had gotten off of the highway in Franklin MA to get something for Anabel for dinner and I was going through an intersection, had a green light, and was hit by someone coming in the opposite direction taking a left.  When I saw her, she seemed to be slowing down to wait... but by the time I saw her actually turning it was too late for me.  I put the breaks on, but she still hit me.  Luckily, we are ok.  Anabel did amazingly and only cried initially and kept asking what the loud noise was.  At this point, not to scare her about an accident or anything, I just have told her that the car is at the drs.  DH is traveling, and was in Canada when it happened.  I ended up hitting my head on the door jam, I assume, and have a nice bump and very sore head.  I also jammed my knee into the center console, and have an awesome bruise.  I really thought I would have done some damage to my knee seeing that when I first jumped out of the car to run to Anabel's door I could barely move it.  Luckily, after a day, I am able to bend it fine, and like I said, only have a bruise.

We think that the car will be totalled... seeing as it was 10 years old, and the air bags went off.  Not much value in the car, and it would be more money to reset the airbags than what the car is worth.  I still have not seen it, I'm actually headed there later to take pictures and get my stuff out ot it.  I'm kind of nervous to see it..... as I am freaked out to drive right now.  Hopefully it's normal to feel that way and will get over it quickly.

Neither of us got cited by the police, and she admitted to me that she did not see me.  I'm not sure what she told the police and why she did not cited, but they said we would leave it up to the ins company to fight it out.  Wonderful.  Because of the age of the car, and seeing it was paid off, we did not have collision coverage just liability.  Our ins adjuster just needs the other drivers info so she can start her stuff with their company, b/c by my statement, she also says the other person is at fault... so here is to hoping we get some money for his car, and the storage fees that it is building up just sitting at some tow yard.

I have to say this was my 2nd accident... first  was when I was pregnant and ran off the highway in my 5 day old new car.  It was pretty scary with A in the car, and I was just so worried about her I barely paid any other attention.

Re: Ugh!

  • Thank goodness you're both OK! An accident definitely can shake you up, especially with precious cargo in the backseat! Thank goodness those safety seats do their job.

But, you will likely have to replace A's car seat, too. http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/weeklyquestion/a/carseats_ask.htm ... maybe see if the insurance will cover that expense as well!

  • I'm so sorry this happened and happy that both you and Annabel are OK.

I believe MA has no fault insurance. Not sure what that means exactly though.  If you were going straight through a light you do not have to yield to someone who is turning. You have the right of way.  Now if you were both turning then there would be an argument there but if she was turning and turned into you, she should have been cited.

I hope it all works out for you.

  • Oh yeah, her carseat was one of the first things I mentioned to everyone.  What was weird is that the a fireman looked at it and said he would be ok seeing I was hit on the drivers side.. I thought it was weird that he said that.  I only used it to get her home and we're not using that one anymore.

I did mention it to the ins company and she said to hang on to it, that the other ins company will probably want us to turn it in to them.  Now it's just a waiting game, moving her current seat back and forth to cars until we figure out getting a new one.

I have to say we are lucky right now, and my mother gave us my grandfather car to use until we get everything figured out.. which is a HUGE relief.

  • scary! so glad you & anabel are ok!! my mom lives in franklin and there are several scary intersections in that town. good luck getting everything sorted out with insurance.

  • So scary! Glad to hear you both are ok.  DH got into a car accident this past summer and totaled his car (same deal as you, older car, all paid off).  It was such as hassle but hopefully they will fault the other driver! Good luck!
