Newfoundland accent

So to see what type of accent I married, have a look at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKaZW3XC-VI&feature=channel

This is a great example of a NL accent.  It's a joke video, but the accent is real.  And for some good laughs, youtube anything "Donny Dumphy" by TheMotionShow.

Satirical, yet SO many truths.

Re: Newfoundland accent

  • Classic liquor store scam.

My brother went to Dal, he of course had some classmates from NL. I could not understand this guy for the life of me! The thickest Newf accent I've ever heard. That video had nothing on this guy.

  • Megerin, I have a Cape Breton accent, so while it can be strong (only when I'm home) it's nothing like that one!

I didn't have a problem either.... but then again I can understand backwoods Alabama redneck talk, so I'm pretty sure I can understand just about anything!!

  • I didn't have any trouble understanding him at all... I would just think that its funny.

I used to work with a friend of mine  who is Serbian... and when she would speak fast and would yell at her to speak english.  It was a fun little joke between us!

And she would randomly start speaking to me in Serbian... no one else in the States EVER... just me.  Random.   She would say two words and catch herself.  She spoke so fast that I often didn't even notice that she switched languages mid-sentence.

  • LOL Ok ok the truth comes out - Dave's accent isn't that thick.  I don't think he has an accent, unless of course he's been drinking.  Or when we're back in NL - then I can hear it.

His mom has a thick accent though, and so do a lot of his friends.  He definitely has friends who I have a hard time understanding.

  • Our dishwasher at work is IMPOSSIBLE to understand.  He's from Mexico and has a little bit of a hearing problem.

Sometimes when he speaks Spanish to the cooks even they have a little trouble understanding him.

And when he tries to speak to me (in English) all recognition of the language is out the window!  He came into the office today when me and my supervisor were talking about tomorrow and said something to her.  He walked out and I looked at Michelle and said "Really? You understood that?  Cause all I got out of it was 'full' and 'push'."

I had absolutely NO IDEA what he said.  Some days I can get it.  Others, I go get Adrian (our lead cook and my favorite) and make him tell me what V is saying.
