S/O Hiding Money - Bonuses, etc

Just out of curiousity, for those of you who get bonuses (or similar 'additional' compensation), now that you're hitched, will you keep that $$ for your own personal spending (or savings) or will that go into your joint w/ hubby accounts?

Background:  DH & I both generally get bonuses from our respective companies.  However, there is a pretty substantial size difference (his usually amounts to 2-3K and he gets part @ Christmas and the rest in March, whereas mine is closer to 10K or more and I get it all at once in March).  I'm still trying to work out my position, but I sort of feel like I should get to keep mine, or at least a good portion of mine, since 1) he's keeping his (or putting it into the house); 2) this is sort of like an extra for both of us - not part of the regular paycheck that pays the bills; 3) for the last couple years, mine has been put solely into fixing up my house so we could sell & get down to one mortgage b/c of bad real estate decisions on his part.

Would love to hear other opinions.

Re: S/O Hiding Money - Bonuses, etc

  • We both get pretty decent sized bonuses in March (we work for the same company, so we get ours at the same time).  It usually works out that we get a tax refund and a bonus within a couple of weeks of each other.  So this year we decided to put our bonuses into our joint account (for travel) and use our tax refunds for personal money.  Right now we're really trying to save up for a first anniversary trip, so we agreed to put other things on hold and use the money for travel this year.

  • Hmm. This is an awesome question. H doesn't get bonuses per se. He works for a HUGE company and gets "rewards" redeemable for gift certificates and things. They're usually given out at the completion of a project and they're usually around $500. In the past, we've discussed what places we should get gift certificates to.

This will be the first year I'm working at a company that gives bonuses. From office hearsay, I think they're usually on the order of $1,000 - $2,000. Part of me thinks this would be an awesome shopping spree. However, I could put it towards the kitchen renovation or towards our vacation next year.

So I'm probably going to discuss it with him. I'll probably end up with a extra $100- $200 to spend and the rest will go in savings.

  • Since DH and I moved in together, I have kept mine and he keeps his.  Our regular paychecks already pay the bills so mine usually goes in to savings after a little spending money is taken out.

  • With my job, I get quarterly bonuses of 5% of my yearly salary if my market achieves it's budget for the quarter. This year, I recently received one for the first 3 quarters of the year all at once. I didn't tell H only because I want to surprise him with an Xbox 360 for Christmas, but I did put money into our savings and some towards our honeymoon trip as well as paying or some of our Christmas gifts and registration tags for my vehicle (which are due in 3 weeks).
he is aware of this quarterly bonus but it's been killing me inside that I've kept this secret for almost 2 months now.

  • I dont have any to really add to his since I don't get bonuses and Don hasn't either until this year and the money has gone towards paying down CC's...his bonuses are only $300-$500 anyhow.

Where in the heck do you work Susie that you get 10K in a bonus...are you hiring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't get bonuses, :( and H's is nothing compared to the numbers ya'll are talking about, so his generally goes to whatever... Like Christmas gifts, paying down the CC, savings...

    THIS!

We only get Christmas bonuses and didn't get one last year. The first year I got $300 and didn't share it with H. I think overall, it'd still be my money because of separate accounts, but it doesn't mean that what ever I'd get wouldn't go towards something for H or something for both of us. I honestly have no idea if H got a Christmas bonus last year or not. I think he might have but I don't remember.

  • aaaand if i didnt feel thoroughly depressed about my lack of money before, reading about all of your bonuses has certainly made it worse.

i have never ever had a bonus, and neither has G.

lol...I work for a biiiiiig insurance company in NJ, not too far from NYC, so payroll is already a bit higher due to cost of living.  The bonuses are never guaranteed...the company has just been doing very well despite the economy due to conservative underwriting & investing strategies.  And bonuses are based on salary & your own personal performance review (so if you suck at your job, you don't get perks).  Plus, I went to school for a very specialized position...college was a biitch, and so are the exams that I have to take now to keep/advance in my job, but there are rewards.  Trust me when I tell you that the secretaries & A/P clerks don't get the bonuses like this, although when the company does well, everyone shares in the wealth.  (PS - from what I've heard, underwriting managers who have a good year get bonuses worth more than I make in a year...makes me think I need to flip to the sales side of the business...)

My first thought when reading a 10K bonus was "I've never known anyone to make a bonus that my salary is so easily divided by." I didn't even need to involve percentages!

I think I need to go find an insurance company to work for. The owner here already suggested I move to NJ (near NYC ironically) and work at the corporate office, but I don't wanna move to NJ.

  • Since you're talking about a lot of money, I would probably sit down with my husband and work something out.  Some amount to keep for yourself, some for savings, etc.

And yeah, that's more than 1/3 of what I make.  Actually, it's a good chunk of our COMBINED salaries.

But if getting money like that means living in NJ, then no thanks.  :)

  • Holy shiz 10K?  I'd actually even be happy w/ 2-3K.  Our bonuses are nothing to be proud of, but it does help me shop for Christmas.  And our owner gave them to us this year b4 BF so we could shop (he knows me so well).

One year my brother got 11K one year and I about shiz my pants.  He also worked for an ins co at the time as a jr underwriter and the biz was doing great at that time.  I tell myself all the time I'm in the wrong industry...

DH lets me keep my measly bonuses.  He knows I work hard for them.  Plus he's grown up so privileged, I think he doesn't like taking money from me period.  Even when I pay a joint bill or buy groceries, he gets all butt-hurt.

  • Well, I am clearly in the wrong field. Gotta love education..haha No bonuses for me and I don't think Jeremy gets one from his company either but not sure since he started there in Feb. Guess we'll soon find out. We're definitely not counting on one though.

  • Unfortunately, Uncle Sam loves to take a chunk of any size bonus, and I usually get 65% of the initial amount after taxes. Which is more than I had before but my bonuses depend all on amount of sales driven into my market in any quarter.
