I need some guidance on winter running gear. What kind of layers and what kind of fabric do you find work well for you?

I know I could just google it, but there's something about asking actual (virtual) people that makes me feel better about the replies.

Re: ** nota and phatkat **

  • For today - 2 bottom layers, 3 upper, gloves & ears covered, wool running socks, my yaktrax, and a fleece scarf.

First layer - I am LOVING my First Ascent base layers from Eddie Bauer. They are soft and warm - fit great, don't bunch - and the tops have thumb loops to keep the sleeves down over your hands. (I LOVE THAT!) I have some UnderArmor, but have found that if they don't have a top layer over them, they make me feel colder when air hits them. The Eddie Bauer layers don't do that. They're made from synthetic merino: http://www.eddiebauer.com/FIRST-ASCENT/First-Ascent-Womens/First-Ascent-Womens-Baselayer/index.cat

I use the Paradise layers. (My H uses them too and likes them better than anything else he has. He works outside.)

Over that - standard long running pants. I'm hard to fit, so my pants are year-round mid-weights. Top: a t-shirt, long sleeve or not depends on the wind speed. If it's really windy, a sweatshirt.

Final layer for top - I have a fleece jacket that's stretchy & I like to run in. I like that I can unzip it partway when I'm warmed up and the cold air starts to feel good. Then the fleece scarf (fleece doesn't get itchy when you sweat) bridges the gap between the unzipped jacket to keep my sweaty neck from freezing.

I'm not very fast though. The faster you are, the more heat you're generating, so you might not need that third jacket layer.

  • I don't seem to be as particular as some runners....good news for me, I can get clothes cheaper. :)

Really, my two requirements are that my base layer is tight fitting and some kind of wicking material. I'm still kinda building up my winter running wardrobe - I spent last winter on the treadmill - but I have two pairs of tights. One is a generic brand from meijer and they work fine. The other is a pair of reebok cold weather compression tights, but they fit looser than the meijer pair. When it's really cold, I layer them.

My favorite base layer shirts are a champion one from target, an under armour mock neck, and when it's really cold, I picked up a generic brand tight fitting turtleneck that's some sort of wicking material (mostly nylon, I think) and it's super warm. I got it from tj maxx, which is an AWESOME place to get running clothes!!

So my usual winter running outfit is either one or two pairs of tights, a base layer, and some sort of jacket (depending on temperature) For really cold weather, a fleece jacket seems to work for me.

Another hint - I've found out vaseline keeps your face from getting windburned!!

  • I'm not a runner but I wanted to share that I have been hearing a lot this year that baby oil is supposed to be super good at heat retention.  I found some google searches to support it.  Basically people say to put it on before you go out into the cold and its supposed to help trap heat for your body.
