Gift Ideas for dad

My dad (is actually my step dad but he is my father through and through) is so hard to shop for.  I asked my mom for ideas and she gave me a few.  He is a fireman and ems person.  He does everything for everyone.  He would give you the shirt off his back when it was 20 below if you were cold.  He really likes fire related ornaments (he has his own little Christmas tree to display them) and we got him one but I'm coming up short with something to supplement it.  He doesn't really watch movies so that's out.  I don't want to get him a g/c b/c I feel like its really impersonal.  He isn't a big sports fan, and to be honest, he really likes sitting around and either playing on the computer (mostly working) or just watching tv.  I feel at a loss for what else we could get him to show him how much he means to us.  Any ideas?  TIA!

Re: Gift Ideas for dad

  • My dad is the same way. So hard to buy for.  I wanted to do soemthign special for him to this year and decided to go the gift card route.  To make it more personal I bought a collage frame and put gift cards for a night out (bonefish for dinner, AMC for a movie, Greaters for dessert, Target in case he needs socks or soemthing:)) in the slots along with some pictures that I have been saving for him.

Or would your dad appreciate a photo book?  Snapfish, etc have great ones and they are always fun to look through.

  • My step dad is a fireman too and I bought him a book at Barnes and Noble...or maybe it was Costco on The History of Cincinnati Fire Houses. It's pretty neat! Or you could do a 6 month subscription to Blockbuster.com. They mail the movies. Or what about a Leatherman Handyman tool (sold at Target or Costco). It's like a Swiss Army knife, but a little bigger and comes with a neat caring case. I think the one we got has 30 different tools on it.It's around $50-60. If he's a fireman he'll def use it...it's great to keep in the car or in your tool box. I'll keep thinking... good luck.

Does this look like what you got?  He would prob love this!!  I just wondered if it was the same thing you were talking about; such a great idea.

I always run into a wall w/ his gifts.  He has EVERYTHING.  And he doesn't watch movies at all, and go figure he has the leatherman tool.  hehe

  • Yes... that's the book. I'm sure there's more books like that at Barnes and Noble. Would he use a Flip Video? I like the book idea PP mentioned. You could make one using Shutterfly or Kodak and make an album for him. This may be a little off, but what a about a GC for a massage? I know a lady in Mt. Adams that runs a special... I think it's $60 for 90 minutes!!! I can get her info if he'd like that. Ok... I'll keep thinking :)
  • I'm back... what about something for his computer since you said he like to be on it? Does he need a new flat monitor or a new external hard drive? I realize that's not a very fun gift, but maybe he'd like it Or a cordless mouse or a game for the computer? You could make a mouse pad for him of something he really likes (the ones you make with photos)?

We thought about the photo book but we got a joint parent's gift that kinda took that part so I didn't want to duplicate it.  I really think he will like that book you mentioned so I'm going to try and swing by there this week and pick it up.

Even though he does spend a good chunk of time in front of his computer/laptop, its ALL work stuff so they provide him whatever he wants.

And he is such a guy's guy so I could NEVER get him to agree to a massage.  Thank you for the ideas so far they are good!
