WWYD? UPDATE!

I had an idea for a great Christmas gift for my mom and 3 sisters: a "peas in a pod" necklace, with a pearl representing each of their birthstones.  I purchased them through Etsy after covo-ing the seller and I received them yesterday.  The problem is, they are not what I expected - she used crystals instead of pearls, which doesn't make them look like peas at all (the whole point of the necklace).  This is mostly my fault - I didn't read everything completely.

I convo'd her back and asked if it would be at all easy to switch the crystals out for pearls; obviously I'd pay for shipping and any other costs associated.  She said I'd just have to have them remade completely, for the same cost (which we can't afford).  HOWEVER, I just noticed she sells the pod charms for $2/necklace less than I paid (is it weird that she didn't mention that?  I kind of think it is, but I could be overly sensitive).

The big problem is that I'm not sure if my mom and aunts will like them anyway.  I think they'll like the pearls more, but still can't guarantee that they'll wear them.

Sorry for the novel; I'm just really bummed about this because I was SO EXCITED about the pearl pod necklaces :(

SO, what do you think?  (Clicky polls make everything more fun!)

Re: WWYD? UPDATE!

  • i would let them know about the pearls and let them know that if they would prefer the pearls to the crystals that i would get it for them for their birthday/whatever. my guess is they'll love them as is. great gift!

  • I second pp idea.  You never know, they may really like them as is, and if so, you don't have to spend the extra money. If not, is there a way to repurpose these or are you sending them back to the seller? If you send them back can you ask the seller for a partial refund at least because guaranteed they'll sell, it's not like they're losing a bunch of money because you want to send them back.

Anyway, long story short, I'd wait and see what they think of them. Can you PIP?

  • The problem with sending them back is that they were made specifically for me - they're birthstones (I thought they'd be colored pearls). She won't refund me or even discount me if I send them back.

I don't have my camera cord with me, but here's what I thought I was getting:

    image

    (except with four birthstone-colored pearls)

And here's, basically, what I got:

    image

(except four stones instead of three, and no circular disc).  The PIP'd crystal one was the only non-pearl one pictured in her shop, so it didn't even occur to me that I wouldn't get pearls.

  • ooh I see what you mean. I definitely can't tell that they're supposed to be peas in a pod - the top one, yes. I'm not sure what I would do in this case because when you said crystals I was still picturing round-ish, not diamond shaped...

This is probably what I'll end up doing, since Christmas is next week.  I just feel bad because what I ended up getting is totally NMS.  Like, at all. And I don't think it'll be their style either.

ETA: And thanks for the compliment!  The idea is so awesome, but I'm feeling really crappy about the way it turned out.  Ugh, but it's totally my fault.

Yes!  If they were round, I'd have a much better time with it.  As of now, it just looks like a birthstone necklace.  Ugh, wtf?  I really don't like them, and I don't think the recipients will either...

My friend thinks the seller should do SOMETHING, but since it was pretty much my fault, I don't think she HAS to, you know?

  • oohhhh. now that i've seen the picture, i totally get it. such a cute idea (the first pic). and you're right, it doesn't make as much sense with the diamond beads. i would be 150% bummed as well. the seller can't give a partial refund? i mean, she can take it apart and reuse the beads at least..i would think.

total bummer. in that case..depending on what they cost..i might scrap it and find something else for them. i'm not sure. :(

  • Yea, I'm going to have to change my answer. First, besides not being what you were expecting, there's nothing wrong with the necklace. It's actually really cute, just not pea-like. Would your mom/aunts mind a birthstone necklace?

If you don't think they'll like it, I would really push the etsy seller (etsy right?) I mean, she definitely misled you into buying something you did not want. I think at least a partial refund is acceptable (if not more). It's not like you're flat out returning it...

If she won't accommodate your request, you should leave a negative feedback message.

Either way, I don't think you should think of a whole new gift for mom/aunts.

  • Ok, I'm leaning toward contacting the seller.  I'm not asking for anything free and I'm not pretending like this isn't my fault - however, I now have a product I don't need/won't use.  I'm happy to send them back, and I'm happy to pay for a replacement - but I don't want to pay the WHOLE cost again.  I'm sure she can reuse the wire to remake what I want - and she can use the beads for another person, right?

So should I say something like:

I'm so sorry to contact you again about this issue, but I really want to give my mom and aunts the gift I had in mind.  If I sent the necklaces back, would you be able to reuse the beads on another customer?  And could you possibly reuse the wire for the necklaces I had in mind?

I know there has to be a solution, and I absolutely know it has to come at an additional cost - but would it be possible at all to cut the cost from the $x cost per necklace I originally paid?

  • So I sent the above message to the seller, and she responded within minutes, saying:

If you want, I can just send you 4 Pea Pod charms :) I definatly understand that you want the gift to be special, and I have been feeling bad about the whole thing as well. I have cracked down on it because I have had some situations where people order the pods and then don't like the color combo they chose and want me to just send them a new one, and I can't keep doing that, so I was a bit sensitive...I apologize. I can send you an invoice for $x for the new Pods and that will also cover the shipping. Does that sound okay?
Thank You for your persistance, I am very appreciative that they are something you want to gift so much and I am sure your Mom and Aunts will love them!

It's going to be less than half of what I originally paid.  I'm totally tearing up over here!  I'm so freaking relieved.  YAY!

  • I'm so glad that it worked out, it sounds like she's had some bad experiences and was trying to cover her arse! Will you have them by christmas?
  • Yeah, once she explained that it made much more sense.  I'm so glad I reached out to her again!

She said she'll ship them as soon as I pay the invoice, which I just did this morning.  I can't tell you how relieved I am.  Thanks for your help, ladies!  I'll PIP when I get them :)
