Crest White Strips for a 13 year old???

So part of the Christmas presents I bought my 13 year old niece includes a large box of health & beauty aid stuff.

Face scrubs, pedicure kids, burts bees stuff, hair accessories, hair products, nail polish......$130 worth of stuff.

Included in this stuff is Crest White Strips. Her teeth are really really badly stained. I have no idea how this ever happened. I wanted to buy her just the white strips, but I didn't want to hurt her feelings. I figured if I did a basket of tons of things, it would downplay the presence of the white strips.

Greg is giving me the side eye and doesn't think it's a good idea. My brother (her father) didn't seem like it was a big deal.

So my questions.....

As her mother, would you be angry?

Do you think I'll hurt her feelings by including them?

I got them in my stocking sometime between the age of 13-16 and I absolutely LOVED them, along with my best friend.

Opinions?

Am I over thinking this?

  • Oh and my niece does not wear make up and does not do anything like highlights to her hair. Very natural.

  • interesting... has she had braces.

i'm actually thinking i wouldn't let my 13yo use them... but i'd have to look into it/read the box before making a decision.

has she said anything to you about her teeth? do you know if it bothers her?

  • So I thought somewhere I heard they could not be used for children under 12.

If she is over 12, I would obviously still research prior to giving an OK, but wouldn't be upset if she wanted to use them.

  • She hasn't said anything to me, but it's a conversation I don't want to bring up.

She just started shaving her legs and really taking care of herself.

She hasn't had braces, and both her parents don't have the best dental hygiene so I don't think either of them would ever invest the money (a whopping $50) even if she did say something

    Ugh......

You know what then...I would put them in.

  • As long as it's safe for her teenage teeth, I would put them in. She's at that age where looks start to matter, and she may really want them and not say anything.

Putting it in the basket is a great idea - I mean, you're giving her a basket full of health and beauty products. It'll blend in, I think.

  • I say put them in, as long as you don't think it'll piss her mother off.

At 13 I would have loved to try white strips- we were always buying Nair and sh!t like that at the stores, any beauty product that was supposed to make taking care of yourself easier or better.

And I definitely would not have got a box of white strips and thought "Aunt Marcy thinks my teeth look gross." I would think "Aunt Marcy is awwwwwwwwwwwwwwesoooooooooooooome."

  • i vote keep them in, awesome aunt marcy :)
  • I agree with Jackie.  If she is just starting the point in her life where she starts taking care of herself, I would put them in.  She would probably actually want them, but they are expensive for a 13 year old.
  • Just a question, did you include a basic beauty book?  Like a "How to" type thing.  It might be a thought.

That's actually a really good idea. Thanks!

  • I don't think it's a big deal. I do wonder how her mom will react, considering you said they don't have the best dental hygiene. Hopefully mom doesn't steal a few!
  • I say as long as she is old enough per the instructions, go for it!  I wish someone would have done the "basic care for yourself" bit for me at that age.  I think it can really help her self esteem and just arm her with more tools to feel better about herself and take care of herself.

    Yay for awesome aunts! :)
