Nighttime Cough

Eli started with a cold about a month ago. It really only lasted a week or so, but he is still coughing at night (and his nose is also still a little runny/stuffy during the day at times). We called the pedi a week into it and they offered the regular recommendations (steamy room, humidifier, very small amount of vapor rub, wake him and offer water, etc.) We have been doing a lot of those things and he is still having 1-2 coughing fits most nights. He went to the pedi for a routine check last Friday and she said everything seemed fine. Does this sound normal? Any other suggestions?

Re: Nighttime Cough

  • Whenever Ridley gets sick, she holds on to the cough for a little while.  I think this sounds perfectly normal.

  • Peter had the same thing early in the year. When we took him to the pedi, they said his chest sounded clear, it just took him a few weeks to get over his cough.
  • Evelyn has the same thing...it is horrible to hear her and like you have tried everything. The pedi also said as long as the lungs are clear she is ok. It just stinks cause it wakes her up.

  • Poor guy, and it's hard not to worry, but that happens to me too as an adult.  It's probably just because he's resting, not talking or clearing his throat, and lying down so everything kind of pools and collects (sorry, gross).  You could maybe try raising the head of his mattress to keep him more upright, but trying to get a toddler to sleep where you want them is next to impossible!

  • Owen and MH both have this and it's lingered for a few weeks.  The cold that's going around sucks, but what Eli is experiencing is typical of others' experience.  I wouldn't worry too much.
