Poll: Why Do you Live Where You Live

Because I'm curious:

1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?

2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?

3)  Why did you choose where you live?

3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?

Re: Poll: Why Do you Live Where You Live

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  Urban, but I live in a very neighborhoody section of chicago.  There's a mixture of single-family homes, condos, and apartment buildings, and only one high rise.  There's lots of trees, parks, and great shopping, restaurants, and bars within walking distance.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  I grew up in the suburbs about 20 miles north.  My parents still live in the same house.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live?   I love Chicago despite the frigid weather in the winter, and I got a great job here out of law school.  I really didn't like growing up in the suburbs, and the commute can be killer to the city.  Plus, my neighborhood is awesome.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?  Most of my family is in the northern suburbs of Chicago (about a half hour drive).  IL's live in Florida, so we don't see them often.  SIL is in the south suburbs, which is also about a half hour away.

    Because I'm curious:

    1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?

suburban. I live on the old army base which is a pretty big family community but we are at the edge of it and it's a couple block to the nearest store. There are nothing but fields that surround us.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?

Rural for sure. I grew up feeding horses, chickens, pigs and working in the fields. Never thought I'd see myself living in the city.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live?

Russ chose it. It's more of a central location to where he works.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?

My parents still live on the farm about 2 hours away and my baby brother and sister live in the same community as my parents. My older sister lives about an hour away. Russell's family live about an hour and a half away in the town where he grew up.

  • 1) Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Rural.  I drive by the cows everyday on my way to work, and often am trying to miss the wild turkey's crossing the road.

     2) Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Rural.  I actually bought my childhood home.

    3) Why did you choose where you live? I chose to by my childhood home and stay there because I LOVE the neighborhood.  My friends and I actually call it the "Wood Hood."  The nickname comes from my maiden name, and a lot of us who grew up there, have either stayed or live close by. It is wonderful.

    3) How far are you from your family? from DH's family? Well my mom, lives with us most of the time (she is our sitter for the boys), my dad & step-mom live about 2 miles  up the road, and my MIL is in the next town over which is about 15 miles from us.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Definitely urban, although we are considering moving more to the suburbs as we start thinking about family.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? I guess you could call ir suburban, although it was a suburb of a pretty small city (only 250k population).  Our house was right on the ocean, and I thought it was a great place to grow up.  Although I would have a hard time moving back there after living in some of the biggest cities (Toronto, NYC, Tokyo and London).

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? All of my moves and locations have been for a job; currently London was for DH's work.  While his job presented the opportunity, we also thought that living in London would be perfect at this time in our lives to let us do a fair amount of travel before settling down.  I was unsure about it at first, but I really like it here now - it's a great pace of life, and the history and culture is amazing.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? Quite far - the Atlantic Ocean separates us from both (my family in Newfoundland Canada and DH's in NYC).  Our next move will probably be to move back to the eastern coast of the US to be closer to his family - that's more a priority for him than for me.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  Very urban, basically in the middle of downtown

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  Suburbs

    3)  Why did you choose where you live?   I grew up in Toronto and haven't had reason to move. I love the multiculturalism in this city. Our current home is super close to work.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?  My parents are in a suburb north of Toronto about 30 minutes away. ILs are in a suburb east of Toronto about 45 minutes away.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Urban, but where we are seems pretty suburban thanks to the quiet area and Rock Creek Park a stone's throw away.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Suburban, right outside of Ann Arbor, MI, about half an hour from Detroit.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? I followed H here after a lot of long distance. I was in MI, he was coming to DC from CO for a great opportunity. MI had no opportunities for him or me, so me moving was the logical choice. I've come to like DC a lot, but I won't lie: I want to move out West badly.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? My parents and two siblings are in Michigan, and I have a brother in Boston going to MIT; H's parents are in Florida and his two brothers are in NY, but one's about to move to Austin, TX.

    Because I'm curious:

    1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Urban I'm in the heart of the city where I live. I love it here. The ability to walk to museums, parks and restaurants is very important to Dh and I.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? I grew up in the burbs. It was great as a kid but a little confining as a teen.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? To be near everything and my job. Hopefully DH will be able to change jobs and work in the city too.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? My Parents still live in the house I lived most of my life in. 30 minutes south. DH's parents are about 1.5 hours north.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Definitely suburban.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Again, suburban.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? Derek and I are definitely suburb-type people.  We chose Hamilton because the further you get from Toronto, the more you can get for your money.  For the price of our house in Hamilton with 2 storeys, a yard and a driveway, we might have gotten a 2 bedroom condo in Toronto.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?  While my mom and step-dad arent' far as the crow flies, because we live on the escarpment, it takes more time to get there, but it's still only about 20 minutes.  My dad and step-mom live in Toronto, about 45 mins away, and the ILs are about 3 hours away on the other side of Toronto.

  • 1) Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? It's a combination of urban and suburban. I live close to large commercial areas, but in a residential area.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Same as above though it was a different area.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? It's a good location that is close to both our jobs, the area is decent, and rent was a bargain, especially for this city.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? We live about 20 minutes away from my family, and 10 minutes away from DH's family. We are talking about moving once the baby is here, and I'm thinking we can put a little distance between us and our IL's.

  • Because I'm curious:

    1) Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Urban

    2) Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Urban, or as urban as you can get in Alaska.

    3) Why did you choose where you live? We moved to Seattle for DH's work. But we had always wanted to get out of Alaska and knew more than likely we would stay West Coast.

    3) How far are you from your family? from DH's family? My immediate family is all in Alaska. DH's family is in South Dakota. DH has one sister that doesn't live in Rapid, she actually lives a little over an hour a way from us here, but we see them maybe once every other month.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Suburban-ish. It's a suburb of of a town of 100K

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Rural

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? I ended up here for undergrad. I love the community and decided to stay after I graduated. I don't, however, love the weather.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? We're 1 hour from my family and about 5 minutes from DH's family.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Suburban, but German cities are a bit different.  Our town is very suburban and right by the autobahn, but I am surrounded by farming fields, horses and my neighbors have chickens.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  Suburban, my hometown is a mid-west town of about 40K people.  My parents still live there.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? The Army brought us to Germany but we chose this specific city ourselves.  We wanted to be far enough from "army life" that we could get away and enjoy the culture, but still not have a horrible commute.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?  Our families are back in the States so they are pretty far.  DH's family is in Spokane, Washington and mine is still in Michigan.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Suburban, but we're close enough to the 2 major highways that it's not too bad.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  I've lived a few different places, but all mostly suburban.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? I went to undergrad and met DH. It seemed logical to stay in this state. I didn't really have any other ties back home, nor did I want to pay for homes near the ocean.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?  My family is mostly around this state, and some are nearby in the Northeast. My brothers, though, are in Montana and Texas (could we spread out more?). That distance kills me more than anything. DH's family lives down the street, in a few different houses, and his extended family is mostly in the same city as us. Can you picture Everybody Loves Raymond? Yeah...that.

  • 1) Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?

We live in a suburb but it's only about a 10-15min drive to get into the city

     2) Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?

I grew up in a rurual area.  Field behind my house, field across the street although we did have neighbours.  Again, it was only a 15 min drive from the city, though

    3) Why did you choose where you live?

We live in this area because our whole family is here.  The specific location we picked because it is very central to anywhere that DH or I might be working.

    4) How far are you from your family? from DH's family?

ILs live about 5 minutes away and Dad is just under 10 minutes away.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  Suburban

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?  suburban, but the whole town was relatively small.  Even if we lived "in town" I wouldn't really call it urban.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live?  I moved to NoVA for work.  I picked Alexandria originally because my BFF lived there when she was here, so I knew the area already.  Then I moved in with DH.  When we started looking for a bigger place, we knew we wanted to stay in Fairfax Co. and closer in (the county is huge), so that's how we ended up where we are now.

    4)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family?  We are 591 miles from my family, per Mapquest.  We are 10 miles from DH's.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Rural by most standards (more suburban than where I grew up...) We are technically called a city, but it is a stretch to even call it a large town.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Rural...very rural.  I grew up in a ski town, so we were busy in the winter, pretty quiet in the spring/summer.  It was the perfect quaint New England town...

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? DH got a job near here, so we moved.  We are now hoping that we will move back across the border to Vermont  which is closer to both our families.

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? Currently 1.5-2 hours from both.  If we can sell our house and move to the town we want to it will be about 45 minutes to both--easy distance to visit in a day and go home without needing to spend the night, but also far enough to not just have random drop-bys.

  • 1) Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? I live in a rural area but it is 'close' to urban areas.

    2) Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?I grew up in a rural area.

    3) Why did you choose where you live? I grew up here, went to to college here (it has the state University), and ended up getting a job here, which you cannot be picky about in this economy!

    3) How far are you from your family? from DH's family? Both live in the same town as us.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Urban! Right in the heart of downtown Toronto.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? I'm military, so I grew up in a lot of places. Mostly suburban with a 3 year rural stint thrown in.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? Because that's where I got in to teacher's college 4 years ago!

    3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? We're a 4 hour train ride from my family and across an ocean (about an 8 hour flight) from his.

  • 1.  Currently: very urban - Boston proper.

    2.   Grew up: suburban (Oakland County, Michigan)

    3. Why do we live here:  I came to Boston for law school, and soon after met my husband here, who is from this area.  We still live here for a variety of reasons: we both love the city and our apartment, I actually have a job here (which is sort of hard to come by for new-ish lawyers these days!), and I am licensed to practice in Massachusetts.  Also, my husband lives and works in Connecticut for about half of the year, so at least this way, we are still within driving distance of one another.

    4.  Family: His lives 30 minutes away from us.  My immediate family is still in MI (except for my brother, who is in North Carolina), but my extended family members are mostly in the Boston-area and greater New England.

  • 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Suburban/rural - we live in a fairly large subdivision but we're surrounded by fields, cows, and prarie dogs.

    2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural? Rural - very small mountain town.

    3)  Why did you choose where you live? My DH grew up in the town we live in as well as 3-4 generations of his family before him. We originally chose to live here because it was close to his business. I fell in love with the town immediatly so we decided to buy our house here.

    4)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? My family is about 45 minutes away, his family is about 10 minutes away.

  • I'm late to the party... 1)  Do you live somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?I guess it depends on your definition.  I live in a Suburban area, I think, because it's a neighborhood and the elementary school is within walking distance... However, I can see a field of cows from my front door.  You decide. :) I think it's Texas/Suburban.2)  Did you grow up somewhere urban, suburban, or rural?I'm like Kaesha, I was an Air Force brat growing up, so I lived a little bit of all over, suburban areas until I was 13, and then we were in a Rural area from then on out when my parents built the house on the land where we got married. 3)  Why did you choose where you live?Josh's job, and it's close to my brother's family and my ILs.  Living out in West Texas wasn't an option, Josh would make about 50% of what he makes now, and have a whole lot less room for growth. 3)  How far are you from your family?  from DH's family? We're about 3.5 hours from my parents, but only about 30 from my brother. We're 30 minutes from Josh's parents. I don't think I could live that close to my parents... They would be too invasive...  I love them to pieces from three hours away though!  We still get to see them often!
