Working out- WWYD?

DH really wants me to go to the gym with him to work out.  Here's the situation: He is really intense.  Like he's considered entering competitions because he's maxed out some of the machines at the gym intense.  Every thing he does at the gym has to be perfect.  Me?  Not so much.  I just want to burn off a few calories and tone up.  We have worked out twice together in the past- and it just made me so frustrated.  I have actually only worked out in an actual gym a few times partly for this reason.  I told him that I am saying no to this because I think it would cause friction between us.  Our styles are just too clash-y.  I told him that I would run with him... but that isn't satisfying him.  Ugh.  Do any of you work out with your DH?  Or, can anyone suggest a compromise?  I  am  running out of ideas and he's running out of patience Huh?

Re: Working out- WWYD?

  • I have a very similar problem with my husband.  We both love to work out and we work out at the same gym.  But we have very different styles of working out.  I perfer classes (a lot of which are intense cardio) with supplemented weight lifting on my own to maintain muscle tone, I also box and take spinning.  DH is very into lifting and body maintenance, he's constantly gaining/losing 15-20 lbs depending on whether he's cutting or bulking up muscle-wise.  He doesn't compete, but he could. It is totally his hobby.

He always wants me to work out with him.  And you're right, it is stressful.   But I've found that the best way to deal with it is every once in a while, like once every other week, I will work out with him and let him design sets for me.  It makes him so happy.  Although sometimes it stresses me out/frustrates me, I know it makes him happy because it is his passion, and I just think that we're lucky we both share a passion for working out even though we may prefer different methods.

So my advice, train with him often enough that he's not begging you, but not so often you're constantly annoyed.  You just need to find the happy balance :)

  • I agree with SweetCFly. Find a happy balance. Maybe one week you'll do a workout with him and then the next week he will run with you.

  • I have the same thing with DH. We've been doing these Insanity workout videos and he pushes me so hard during the work outs, tells me to try harder when I'm always trying as hard as I can. I've gotten to where I just don't respond to what he says when we work out haha. I know that doesn't really help you much though. I agree with PP about finding a happy medium working out some times with him and some on your own maybe?
  • Oh my gosh, girls. I'm so relieved I'm not the only one!!!  Phew, lol  Thank you for the encouragement and suggestions.  My goal will be to find that happy balance.  I guess I could handle that once every other week ;)  I know that if I do go with him, he will be sooo excited- I just hope I live through it.  I would love to take a kickboxing class. Maybe I can talk him into doing that with me.  Then we can work out together, but he wont be the one demanding that I fix my posture, etc.  I will try talking to him about this tonight!
