Runners - Running "Barefoot"?
Hey there nestie runners! I'm interested to know your take on the whole running barefoot/with "barefoot shoes" craze. I've just signed up for a YMCA membership and am re-starting the C25K program and I'm thinking about starting off running in an affordable "barefoot shoe" option. I figure if that's best I shouldn't get into bad habits at first.
Any thoughts?
I know when I ran track in HS we just wore those little cleats with spikes only on the forefoot, so to me "barefoot" sort of makes sense...

I have never tried it and I don't know a ton about it, but I am not opposed to trying barefoot running sometime in the future. It can be better if you are injury-prone, and the motions are more natural. When wearing regular shoes, most people land on their heels. Keep in mind this is how most people run (including me). It's supposedly bad, although I don't know why. But if you run barefoot, you cannot land on your heels. You land on the balls of your feet. Take your shoes off and try it. Your foot will bend and feel like a spring.
I wouldn't try it just because it seems like a more affordable option. It's not. Minimalist shoes (Vibram Five Fingers and Nike Frees are two examples) are about the same price as regular running shoes. That said, it can be a good option. If you do decide to go barefoot, ease into it. You land differently and use different muscles than running in regular shoes. People who try it seem to like it. DH has a pair of Nike Frees, runs in them occasionally, and likes them. I even saw a handful of people in a half marathon wearing Five Fingers.

Thanks! Yeah for shoes I just meant buying cheaper "barefoot" shoes, not that that would be cheaper than conventional running shoes.
I think I might try that - I've never developed the habit of running on my heels, so I won't have to transition, and since I'm still at the beginning of the C25K thing I'll be taking it pretty easy.
