Christmas Cards

I send out Christmas cards. Have done so every year for a long time. This year, I sent out tons more than usual because, since the wedding, I now have addresses for all of DH family. So they all got cards too.

It is 10 days before Christmas, and do you know how many cards we have recieved? 4. That's it...4.  I usually have my entire front door covered with the cards we've recieved and taped up there.

I admit that I'm rather insulted.

Is this a dying tradition? Do people just not send cards anymore?

Re: Christmas Cards

  • We've gotten a big fat TWO! I'm giving people the benefit of the doubt and hoping everyone is just behind this year. I did just send ours out on Monday, so I'm guilty of being late myself!

I wish it wasn't, but I do think the tradition is dying a little bit. However, I think photo cards are helping to revive it. I know people get all excited about seeing the pictures and about picking which pictures will be on their card.

  • We've gotten 2, but I know we won't get too too many because not a whole lot of people have our new address.  I know we'll get a few though because people have been asking us for our new address.  My parents have gotten like 4, but I think they'll get more this week and definitely more into next week.  Usually my parents get the most in the final two weeks leading into Christmas, and even in the last week before Christmas... so, like now.  Some even wait until after Christmas itself to send theirs out!  Like between Christmas and New Years.

We haven't even sent ours out yet, we're still waiting for them to come in!  I was hoping they'd be in by today so I could address them tonight and mail them out tomorrow.  Don't think that's going to happen because they're not here yet :(

I know people are scaling back on them, too.  My grandmother said she sends out less and less every year.  I we're sending out 75.  We could have sent out closer to 115, if we sent to everyone on out wedding list (but we're not).

It's sad because it's a nice sentiment for the holidays.

  • we've actually gotten some this year (b/c of all the stuff we sent out for hte wedding) people ACTAULLY have our new address to send it to!

but we're not sending them this year ---- we've already spent way too much on postage this year due ot hte wedding send-outs so ill start w/ christmas cards next year.

  • Hopefully my cards will arrive today :) I ordered Christmas cards late this year because I wasn't planning on getting them and then I saw they were 50% off so I spent more on shipping them here quickly than I did for the cards themself. lol

We have gotten quite a few, more from people I didn't expect to get cards from, and no card from people who usually send them.

Maybe it is just a wierd year for cards???

If you want I will send all of you ladies Christmas Cards :) I talk to you more than my extended family lol

  • We've gotten 4 as well and I just told DH last night we must had made some people mad or something. Usually my cabinets in the kitchen are covered with the holiday cards. I'm a little sad about it too. We sent ours out, i'm just hoping everyone sent them late.

  • We also have only received 4 cards this year. I have a feeling people are just late this year. For some reason, this year more than others, I feel like Christmas snuck up on us. Came way too fast after Thanksgiving.

We only sent ours out yesterday! So I'm hoping others are in the same boat as us. Either that or people don't like us as much as we thought they did!

  • We've gotten maybe 6 or 7 so far this year.  We sent out around 60.  I think that it is a dying tradition.  Let's face it, in this rough economy, sending Christmas cards is probably low on everyone's priority list and will be one of the first things cut if extra money isn't there.  I mean, this was our first year to send out cards together so we went ahead and did it but after buying the cards and paying for postage we probably spent over $100.  That's $100 for something that gets looked at once and then thrown away by most people.  So, I can see why a lot of people are skipping cards this year.

  • Maybe it is just a sign of the times and people are cutting back on costs like postage and stuff.  I did get 2 more yesterday afternoon...so we're up to 6!  hahaha

Thanks ladies...it really sounds like everyone's having the same experience!

  • I've been having the same experience. What I've done is write down everyone I've sent a card to and when I receive a card back I will check off their name. So next year I only plan on sending cards back to those who sent me one this year. This is my mom's advice, and it makes sense, no one can get mad at you since if you didnt send them a card then they didn't send you one either.
