Grammar police - Q about X-mas cards
How do you sign your x-mas cards?
The Olson's
or
The Olsons

Re: Grammar police - Q about X-mas cards
no apostrophe.
apostrophe shows ownership. You're just signing your name. HTH?
Yep - PP was correct.
The Olsons is plural for more than one Olson.
The Olson's is possessive.

Ditto this!
(Although actually, I prefer to have everyone's name written out, e.g. Love, Mary, Bob and Sally Olson, but that's just a personal preference.)
Me too, I always sign stuff from Sara & Andy.
We don't have the same last name, so that complicates things. Speaking of that, I'm so annoyed by all the holiday cards we're receiving that are addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Andy Axxxxx." I am not Mrs. Axxxxx. And most of these cards are coming from relatives who have all been told that's not my name. Pay attention people.

Nothing against the OP but I cannot stand when people sign things Smith's. I see it all the time on holiday cards and it drives me batty.
Sorry rant over, didn't mean to hijack the post.
Agreed. I've even seen it on cutesy signs, especially on Etsy.
The apostrophe thing drives me bonkers! I even put out a PSA on my Facebook to try and educate my friends....and I've still received a few that make me shake my head. ::letting it go::

Were they house signs? Like signs that people put on their house or door? I've always wondered if those tend to have apostrophes because it's like saying "this house belongs to the Smiths. It is "The Smith's". As opposed to saying "The Smiths" live here. And then maybe people see "The Smith's" on someone's house and confuse the meaning and think that there should always be an apostrophe... I'm not sure if that's the way house signs are intended, but I wonder if that's where some of the confusion comes from...
True, but even in this context, showing ownership to a house, it should be The Smiths'. Otherwise it is the house of just one Smith. Not a family of Smiths.

That is...odd.
Did some people just get NO grammar education in school? It seems people are either super zealous about it or they have no flipping clue where to put apostrophes.
Some of you might get a kick out of this: http://www.apostrophe.org.uk/examples.htm
ITA. It drives me nuts that people can't understand the difference between possessive and plural...gah!
It is isn't it? Granted, this is my side of the family doing this to my new-er (it's been over 3 years folks) married name, but still! And the most recent was an aunt who never did this before. Why the change?

Oh right, duh... I didn't think that theory all the way through...
Coming back to my original post a little late, but I just wanted to expand on our x-mas cards. I ended up signing our cards this way:
Merry Christmas!
The Smiths
Joe, Sue, and Molly
(names not real)
I do agree with you, I like knowing who each person is.
That is pretty ridiculous. We take great care to know the full names of all who live at the address -- whether they are married with different last names, living together and not married, whatever. The card is addressed with the correct name.
On a slightly different note, I cannot stand getting the cards that are addressed Mr. and Mrs. Bxxx Wxxx. Yes, we are legally married and I did change my last name to his, but I do not see myself as Mrs. Bxxx Wxxx. This is why we address all cards with first and last names and no "titles".
