Dog Food

I guess I am full of questions today!

Do any of you change up your dogs food without reason? Manny has been eating Californal Natural Lamb and Rice for almost 2 years and does really well on it. He started out on Canidae, but he has a sensitive stomach and we think the chicken was bothering him, so we switched. I usually go by "if it ain't broke.." but am just wondering if we should give him more variety or a change.

Re: Dog Food

  • No, Henry's been on the same food, Nutro Max, since a puppy, just changing from puppy to large breed.  It's not the best food, but it's not the worst.  He does well on it, has a nice coat, and gets plenty of supplements from his little friend, Marcus, so I agree, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  • Digby has been eating the same food for about a year when we switched him from a puppy formula to his "big boy food". Given by how fast he charges at his bowl for his meals and how excited he gets about food, he'll stick with that until we have problems. We buy it through Kennel Shop and get a free bag with every 10ish bags that we buy.

  • We have only upgraded pretty much.  We started on Wysong, are now on Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison.  Because it is a Limited Ingredient Diet, I thought it would be good for Santana because of her ear issue (she's had since a puppy).  No change on the ear but they both like it.

  • Vets recommend the "if it works don't fix it" solution b/c dogs actually can develop allergies later on and switching foods can lead you down a path you don't want to go. So, unless the formula has been changed drastically , etc we stick with the same food. Our guys have been n Barking at the Moon for a while now after switching them from Solid Gold. We also take advantage of the Kennel Shop deal.
  • Yeah, I figured there was no reason to change since he plows through his food and isn't having any problems on it. Just got to thinking that I wouldn't want to eat the same exact thing for 2 years, but he doesn't seem to mind so we'll stick with it. We get it at Kennel Shop with the frequent buyer deal too. Thanks ladies!

  • Sometimes Bear's food isn't in stock so if I forget to stock up we have to give him something else while we wait.  At 15, I can assure you I do everything to keep him on the same food becuase it 1) makes him sick, and 2) makes him angry.  He'll look at the food and back at me with a face that says, "That's not my food and I do not want to eat it".  This may just be him giving me attitude and a bit of old age/being set in his ways, but I do notice a difference between foods.  So yeah, I'd say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  • Simon had a horrible stomach when we got him... he was on Nature's Recipe and we switched him to the sensitive stomach type adn still had issues. He's now on By Nature and it's been awesome.
  • yeah, I'd get pretty bored too. Now my cat, he needs t change every few months b/c he just goes on eating strikes lol

Jess you have Cocker Spaniels right?  I had them growing up, and they are prone to ear issues.  We had to switch to stanless steel bowls that were up enough so his ears wouldn't dip in every time he ate or drank.  Not sure if you are already doing that :)
