Walmart... wdyt?

Personally, I'd love to have a Walmart and don't get why people are so against it.

What's your thoughts on the subject?

Re: Walmart... wdyt?

  • i'm all for it, especially in this economy i don't see anything wrong with bringing in a little more competition to keep prices low and affordable.

  • I think people's strong reactions are based on the way that Walmart treats their employees. They pay very low wages, and sometimes allow their employees to only work up to the hour that would prevent them from being eligible for health benefits, and even then their health benefits suck.

Also, Walmart has a tendency to arm-wrestle their suppliers into providing them stuff at extremely low prices. This leads to crowding out of local businesses who cannot compete with those low prices.

That is what I have garnered from my research on Walmart.

All that being said though, there is a Walmart near me in Valley Stream Long Island, and I do shop there because really the prices are low. But I try not to buy everything there (aka I shop at some local stores) to remove some of my guilt. Embarrassed

  • But Walmart isn't the only place that does that. I used to work at a supermarket and if 35 hours was the point that you'd qualify for full-time (and the benefits) then they'd let you work 34.5 hours and make sure you punched out not a minute after.

in this economy there are so many people looking for jobs that I'm sure some of them would rather have low pay than no pay. If you don't like the way they treat their employees, don't apply there.

  • I thought the same thing too but apparently Walmart makes sh*tloads of money and really CAN afford to pay their employees and give them benefits. But I see your point. I would rather work at Walmart than no where at all but that is the point that has people all riled up about them setting up shop here.

  • I worked at Walmart part time for 3 years. It's a huge company for one thing, I feel it's business practices are representative of most chain stores. But, it's so big that it's more evident and gets more of a reaction. I'm leaning towards they don't make a lot of money to keep prices so low. Some stuff in the store, they don't even make a profit and are negative. It's not like the banks and other 500 companies where the executives are living it up. They stay at discount motor inns on business travel.

  • I see no issue with it.  How is it much different than Target? I've seen the people that work at Target and they don't seem to be very happy either.. But honestly, in this economy, I don't see why we shouldn't let them build one.  Not only is it a *LOT* of jobs for people who otherwise don't have one and I miss getting my groceries at the Super Walmart :D
