Mexico advise?

My daughter wants me to take her to Mexico for graduation this coming up year. SHe has been dying to see the Ruins for quite some time. It would have to be a fairly short trip (5 days prob). Any good tips on where to stay? I would like an AI maybe, not to pricey. Give me all your travel knowledge =D

Re: Mexico advise?

  • I heart the Palace resorts.  They also include excursions in their AI prices.  So you won't have to pay the extra to go see the ruins. The only down side is you have to go on their schedule not your own.  We stay at the Moon palace in Cancun and it was wonderful.
  • I stayed at Moon Palace earlier this year and I liked it but I thought it was WAY too big.  It's like three large hotels jammed into one.  You have to take a shuttle to get from one part of the resort to the other unless you don't mind a 15-20 minute walk.  I personally prefer smaller resorts, but that's really just a preference!  I did enjoy the tubs in the rooms and the rooms themselves were fantastic!

Though, if she wants to see the ruins I'd suggest staying closer to Playa del Carmen and not Cancun.  You'll travel a bit further from the airport but there's more to do in that area and you'll be closer to do more sightseeing.

  • We stayed at two resorts for our weddingmoon. Secrets Capri was awesome! Smaller in size so it felt cozier. You got to know the staff and vs versa. We honeymooned at El Dorado and it was too massive for my taste. Over a mile long without a great beach.

I would also suggest staying at Dreams Tulum. I heard great things about that resort and its a sister company to Secrets. Since both mentioned above are in Playa and you have to be 18 and over. So if she's not, you'll need to find a family friendly resort. Dreams Tulum is much closer to the ruins. Depends on which one you want to go to, Tulum is the closest to Playa and its still took us over an hour to travel there. Chitciza (sp?) they said was about 2 1/2 hours away. YIKES!

Good luck and she'll have the best grad gift ever!

  • If the biggest reason for the trip is to see the ruins then I would recommend just sucking it up and going to Chichen Itza. We stayed at the Casa Magna Marriott in Cancun and it was like a 2.5-3 hour drive by bus. I would definitely recommend taking a guided tour. The drive is sorta of long & it's just nice to be with people who can tell you what you're looking at. You can always break away from the tour once your at Chichen Itza, and then meet up again when it's time to leave. Chichen Itza is huge and there's so much to see. There are smaller ruins that are closer, Tulum, but from my understanding they're much smaller and just not as much to see at all. On our tour to Chichen Itza there was a man & wife with us who had been to Cancun many, many times & always go to the ruins. That trip was like their 5th trip to Chichen Itza, but they're only gone to Tulum once because he said it's just not as awesome & too small for the amount of time it take to get back & forth.

You're going to have a great time no matter what you choose to do, and your daughter will LOVE it! Sorry I'm no help with AI resorts.

  • Thanks guys! I will start looking at prices for all of these. She is really excited about it.
