OKC Board Votes To Go Year-Round

Thoughts? I know some schools already had this policy. Do any of you have children that already go year-round? Will your child be changing to year-round?

Re: OKC Board Votes To Go Year-Round

  • The school where I work is not changing to a continuous learning schedule. We're a charter and get to make our own decisions about scheduling (which is something I LOVE).

I think it would work for elementary schools, but getting up into secondary/high school, if other schools aren't on a similar schedule, competitive events could be difficult to schedule. Not just sports, but anything that could be considered competitive (speech/debate, band, choir, orchestra, academic team, etc.). It would also take away summer opportunities for intensive camps like Interlochen (music) that take up most of the summer. Teachers who rely on a full summer for work on advanced degrees would lose that ability, to a point.

I appreciate that OKCPS is trying to do something. I'm not sure this is the answer to all their ills, but at least they're trying.
