When did LO walk?

I know every kid is different and the age range is huge for first steps, but should I be concerned that my 14.5 month old doesn't seem all that close to walking yet?  She cruises everywhere on furniture, can stand unsupported for about 10 seconds but doesn't seem to have any interest in walking.  She won't walk with us holding her hands (she wants to bounce up & down to "dance" instead) and she just started walking with a push walker thing. I feel like she 'could' do it if she wanted to, but has no interest in doing it, she'd rather sit and read a book

I've heard that kids either walk first or develop verbally first and she is extremely verbal so I haven't been concerned about the walking but I keep getting the "she isn't walking yet!!!???" question/comment/accusation which is making me question myself.

Re: When did LO walk?

  • J walked 2 days before she turned 9 months old.

up to 18m is normal for a babe to take their first steps. cruising & walking with a push toy are great starts. Some kids will not walk holding your hands no matter how often/hard you try, but it's still nice to give them that option. J would not walk holding anyone hands until after she'd been walking on her own for over a month, she rarely cruised or used a push toy - she was all about standing on her own though.

Oh, she did walk holding onto the dog a few times before she could walk on her own.

  • I would not be too concerned.  My oldest daughter (15 now) said her first words at 10 months old, and she was VERY verbal at an early age.  She walked at 15 months.  My son (almost 3) took steps at 10 months, officially was walking at 11 months, but did not say a heck of a lot when he was one.  My second daughter (10 months old now) took first steps at 8.5 months, and was a walker a month later at about 9.5 months.  She's not talking yet, but I'm curious to see where she'll fall in the spectrum.  She is very adventurous and has always been a mover.

I bet your daughter will surprise you and just take off one day.  Even DD2 would just practice standing for the longest time, and when she started walking she was GOOD at it.

Tell other people to mind their own business... all children develop at their own speed.  It's not like she's going to be in kindergarten and still not walking, you know?  And, no need to question yourself,  you're doing a great job with that little cutie!

  • Ben cruised for ages and didn't take his first independent steps until he was 14 months old.

Do you have a 15 month appointment with the pediatrician? if so, I'd ask then. But up to 18 months is normal for first independent steps. It seems she has the ability, just not the interest. She may surprise you and a week from now just take off ;-)

  • I wouldn't worry at all.  She's taking all the right steps (hehe) to get her walking.  If she wasn't standing or cruising (like Cam) I'd be concerned. I'm sure she'll be walking in the next few weeks and you'll be wishing she was still crawling ; )

I COMPLETELY understand the "isn't she walking??" frustration. So annoying.  I find myself feeling like I have to explain her situation to strangers and I shouldn't have to.  grr.

  • ditto everyone else and if it makes you feel better, talk to your pedi at your next appointment. people are rude and inappropriate, it's perfectly ok to remind them of that :P

  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies!  I do have a 15 month appointment so I will definitely bring it up then. I have a feeling she is going to just take off one of these days too, we'll see!

  • Shannon took her first independent steps when she was almost 13 months. At the conclusion of her remarkable 16-steps right across the playroom, she fell and scared herself. She has such a good memory that she refused to take another step on her own for months. She'd crawl everywhere, and would walk holding onto things, but just would not let go. She finally did, and there's been no stopping her since. She was an early talker, though.

Kyle is 7 months and will walk if we hold his hands. He loves the doorway jumperoo and can stand unsupported in there for minutes (without relying in the straps at all). He's army crawling everywhere, pulling himself up to near standing from the floor, and hitting these physical milestones before Shannon did. Our pedi said he's on track to be walking by 9 months. lord help us!

  • No stress!! Average is 14 months and anywhere up to 18 is considered totally normal :) Emma took her fist solo steps around 14 months, fell and decided she didn't like walking. Then she walked holding on to one finger for three whole months before she decided she was ready to let go. She was running by the end of the day. Charlotte on the other hand walked around 13 months but was taking steps at 11. Em is a total perfectionist at everything she does. C is a maniac, wild child.  Every kid is different. And tell people to SHUT IT. It drove me crazy when people couldn't believe that Em didn't walk.
