Whine, whine whine: Who wants to pay for my grad books?

I'm starting my grad classes next month... I'm only taking 2, but had to order 5 books. The prices through the school were OUTRAGEOUS so I took the ebay/ half.com version.... and it still cost $225 .... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

bltch over.

Re: Whine, whine whine: Who wants to pay for my grad books?

  • I used half.com all the time for my books and sometimes Amazon as well. It's crazy how fast that stuff adds up. But I think you keep your grad books so you can put them in your fancy smancy office and look smart Geeked
  • Yeah, see...I just didn't buy any. ?I refused to spend the money on them so I worked around it. ?Don't know what you're getting your grad degree in, but it worked ok for me for geochemistry, haha. ?I even ordered one sent it back a day later because I felt it was too much. Books are redonk expensive.

haha, DH's MS is in psychology...he bought a ton of books. Suckas!

  • Here's a warning... if you plan on SELLING your books on Amazon marketplace make sure you have tracking/insurance. DH was ripped off by some jerk b/c he claimed the book was not inside. The photos the buyer sent clearly showed he tampered with the envelope yet Amazon sided w/ him and DH was out $50.
  • Textbooks are soooo expensive.  At least you were able to save a little money.

  • Ouch!  I feel your pain.  I had 8 years of college, books are stupidly expensive.  My favorite was when I paid a hundred dollars for a book and the prof changed it the next quarter so I couldn't sell it back.  UGH!!!
  • I feel like this happened every 2 seconds during Undergrad. My first semester's books cost $500. I was ready to drop out!
  • As soon as I win the lottery, I'll buy your books for you!!!  haha

Man, when I was in college, I would buy the USED books and they'd still be absolutely outrageous.  Then after the semester was over?  I'd go back to the bookstore to try to sell them back.... "Oh, you paid $125 for this book?  Here's 12 bucks back."  It's a huge ripoff.  Either that or every semester they'd come out with a new edition that you HAD to buy, so you'd have to pay full price for a brand new book that you most likely wouldn't be able to sell back

This exactly. I would never get hardly any money back. sh!t sucks.

  • My friends and I, if we had the same class, we'd split the cost of a book and then share it.  Or try to find someone who had the class the semester before and buy the book from them cheaper than you would at the bookstore.

  • You could look into renting textbooks; sometimes that's an option. There are also some texts available in electronic format now, and those can be cheaper than the physical versions. I'm guessing that the route you went was still probably the cheapest, though. Sad

Textbooks are awful. I got off fairly cheaply because I was an English major in undergrad, so I bought a lot of Penguin Classics and stuff for a few bucks each. Grad school was pricier, and I bought most of my books used online, too.

Can't wait until HH starts his master's in counseling. Actually, I can't wait, because he really needs that degree to advance professionally, but the price tag... Yeah, I can wait on that.
