Mold removal

I'm buying a foreclosure that has been empty for about  1 1/2 years.  Last time we visited the house we noticed mold in the basement.  It is a finished basement and the mold is found near the bathroom. The bathroom has it pretty much all over and the wall outside of the bathroom has it as well, though not as much.  Our home inspection is this afternoon and hopefully we'll we be able to find out more about it, but I'm curious to find out how hard it is to remove it.  I've done some reading online and I know how to remove different kinds, but obviously I've never done it before. I'm curious to know how strenuous it is or how expensive is it to have someone come in and remove it for us.

Also, would it be risky for us to move in upstairs and just not use the basement until someone gets it cleaned up or can it travel through the duct work and get upstairs?

Obviously I know nothing about mold and I don't know what type of mold it is either.

Re: Mold removal

  • Your inspector may be able to tell you a little more this afternoon, but ultimately you need to start looking toward mold remediation specialists. As to your questions...

I'm curious to know how strenuous it is or how expensive is it to have someone come in and remove it for us. This will completely depend on how far the mold has grown (and it sounds pretty bad from your description). Mold that has gotten into the drywall and/or studs and duct work could be very expensive to have treated and removed.

Also, would it be risky for us to move in upstairs and just not use the basement until someone gets it cleaned up or can it travel through the duct work and get upstairs?  Personally, I wouldn't move in until it's professionally remediated and the air is clean. I would be concerned that it's black mold, which can be toxic. Mold of any form is bad for your respiratory system and can make you ill.

Obviously I know nothing about mold and I don't know what type of mold it is either. This is something to ask your inspector. He may or may not know either. He'll probably just point out the mold and possibly guess at the severity of it, but ultimately he will direct you toward a mold remediation company to have it removed.

  • My husband owns a contracting company and I asked him what he does for people to remove mold.  He said that its just water and bleach that you use to clean it up.  Instead of paying someone to do it for you for an incredible amount of money you could just do it yourself.  Just make sure you wear a mask ; )

  • If it's enough mold that you see it all over down there, there is probably alot going on behind the walls that you aren't seeing. I'd pay to have a mold remediation company or home inspector come in and tell you what kind of mold it is, if they'll need to remove it and clean the air, or if its something you can take care of yourself with some bleach water.

Some is just safe to take care of yourself, some types are better left to professionals. And either way, I wouldn't move in until its cleaned up. Good luck!

  • I suddenly started having mold in a bathroom where none had been for years.  It turned out to be caused by a leak under the house.  When the leak was fixed, no more mold.  It could be something simple, but I have also heard that it can be more complex.
