Help me plan my Christmas dinner?
So now that my family is coming out here, I really want to make a big Christmas dinner for everyone. I'm pretty much set on having ham, but I'm not sure what to make with it... I really like au gratin potatoes, but I don't have a good recipe (Shauni? LTB? Help a sister out? :-)) and boxed ones are not going to do.
What would you like to eat with your ham for a Christmas feast? Bonus points if you provide recipes for this kitchen illiterate.

My family makes 'pineapple filling' to go with ham...very sweet, but oh, so tasty...
::runs off to dig out the recipe...::
Edit...recipe, off the top of my head:
1 stick of margarine or butter, at room temperature
1 cup of sugar
4 eggs
1 20 oz can pineapple (not drained)
5 slices of bread, cubed
Cream the butter & sugar together. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each egg. Add the pineapple. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the bread cubes. Pour into a greased casserole dish and bake uncovered at 350 for 1 hour.
Hmm....I'll start with the ham. Do you know how you want to prepare it? I've used these recipes from allrecipes.com
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Honey-Glazed-Ham/Detail.aspx and added pineapples and maraschino cherries.
this one takes a bit, but you might debate on marrying the ham after eating it. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Sangria-Ham/Detail.aspx
I have a mushroom potato gratin recipe at home (I can't remember where I found it). I haven't made it yet, but it had excellent reviews. We always were super original and made mashed potatoes but I want to do something different this year too. But PW has a good au gratin. http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/01/perfect-potatoes-au-gratin/
I come from a boring family that also only had corn as a side dish. I think I'm going to make my spicy corn maque choux this year. Its corn, red pepper, green pepper, onions, jalapenos and spices. Its on my blog but the recipe is kinda messy, so if you want it, it'd be easy to type up and post separately or PM you with it.
Here's my green bean casserole recipe: http://cookaholicwife.blogspot.com/2010/12/cheesy-green-bean-casserole.html Although, if you're doing cheesy potatoes, it might be too much with two cheesy sides.
But to actually answer what I like with my ham....potatoes, vegetables and a roll of some sort.

Oh here's a recipe for sugared aspargus:
1 bunch asparagus
2 tbs. butter
1 tbs. brown sugar
1/4 cup chicken broth
In a medium skillet, heat the butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Once the sugar is dissolved, add the asparagus and saute for 2 minutes. Add the chicken broth, bring to a simmer and then cover, reduce heat to low and cook for 8-10 minutes or until the sauce is slightly thickened. Drizzle sauce over asparagus once plated.

Ohmygosh this stuff all sounds SO good! I think I might make it all. :-) My mom and brother are pretty picky eaters, so a lot of the stuff that I would love (like brussel sprouts and asparagus) may be out of the question... I'll look at the recipes tonight and try to figure it all out.
Thanks for the suggestions!
mmm, it is so yummy!
we do ham too, but our meal is more like a brunch. BUT we do have cheesy potatoes with ours. They are a bowl of yummy, oozy, deliciousness (and I tell myself they contain no calories too). That could be an option. Those go well with ham too.
I made these for Christmas last year and served with ham, corn, King's hawaiian rolls, and devilled eggs.
