So my good (albeit 4 yr old) North Face fleece jacket had a run in with the dog tonight (in short, I was exercising and ignored him - he had been fed and walked - and he ate my pocket to get to treats...he hasn't done anything similar in 1yr+, and i know its my fault for leaving the jacket out (hanging on a chair) with treats in the pocket. Man I was pissed though).
So there's a roughly 3 in hole where the left pocket belongs. This is, obviously, not completely repairable, but I'd like to salvage this jacket for cold trips to the dog park, yard work, etc. It is a little worn anyway but I don't want to trash it (and it is the first Christmas gift Chris gave me..and we don't really do gifts now much).
I called North Face and they don't sell/send fabric. I could send it for repair but it'd be at least $75 and I could get a new jacket for just a little more...
I was thinking about an iron on patch of some sort. I know I can't match the red exactly so I was thinking black but want something nicer looking/more substantial than those iron on things they sell in 6 packs for kids knees. Ideas? Would iron seam tape work for this?
Sigh. sorry this is so long.
Re: crafty/sewing girls
You need something to close the hole, whether you just bring the edges of it together and sew (would be bunched up, not nice) or sew a piece of fabric over the hole. I would get some black fabric, fleece maybe? Flip the jacket inside out, cut the fleece or whatever to the shape of the hole, but bigger, then sew into place. You'd see the stitch line on the right side of the jacket though, which you may not like (though you could match your thread to the color of your jacket, so it is less noticable). This all depends on if you can sew, and have a machine! I suppose you could use the iron seam tape to do this. I am just not sure how sturdy it would be. Like it if it would eventually pull apart. The other issue is, the border of the hole. Will it unravel? What type of material is it? If it is fleece, or a knit (like a tshirt) it shouldn't unravel. I hope some of this makes sense.
What if you check with an alterations shop to see if they can fix it/patch it and see what they'd charge?

I am having a bit of trouble picturing the hole. What is the fleece material? Is it polartec? You can order it online (I found a place that sells bundles of 2"x4" samples for color-matching purposes, but maybe that would be big enough?). Or at least it would enable you to find a close enough match. If you want more info, let me know.
If you need to use a machine or need someone to fix it, I could take a look.

Its fleece, similar to this. Becky do you know what the site with the samples is? 2x4 would definately cover it. I didn't take a picture last night because I was so angry, but its about an inch across and a couple inches long, jagged edges. He basically put my pocket in his mouth and chewed
thanks for the input!
