XP: My first midwfie appointment

It was just an initial visit, we talked a bit and she took some blood. She used the doppler and tried to hear the heartbeat but apparently I have a main vein right there and it was overpowering - she said next appointment (Jan. 10) we will be able to hear the baby's heartbeat, when it's a little bigger. I'll be about 14 weeks then.

I'm really glad to be going this route (with the midwife) but part of me wishes that I was getting an early ultrasound (before 20 wks). I just want to know that everything's okay, you know? The midwife didn't tell me any numbers or anything of real significance to make me feel like this is all real. She said that I'm definitely pregnant (she could tell by touching my uterus), but I already knew that, haha.

I guess I just have to wait til my next appointment to hear the heartbeat and just trust that everything is going good in there!

Re: XP: My first midwfie appointment

  • I hope your next appointment is more informative. It would drive me nuts not to know anything other than to know I was pregnant at that point, especially when you're almost to second trimester. Maybe in this case no news is good news. Why can't they do an ultrasound before 20 weeks?

  • It's just one of the differences between doctors and midwives. They can order an ultrasound before 20 weeks if they think it's nescessary, but otherwise they just do the one, to make sure everything's going well and find out the sex.
  • It sounds very frustrating, but in the end, you'll be happy with your midwife decision. I've had a few friends go that route that really love it. HOpefully you'll have a better idea at your next appointment. Thankfully, the holidays will keep you busy almost until the day of.

  • Well congrats on the "no news good news" appt!  Had to be nice to at least get that first visit out of the way.

Did the MW try to date your pregnancy?  Is it possible you aren't as far as along as you think (I remember you saying something about your long cycles... or am i making that up?)  Maybe its just too early for the doppler, I read that they aren't guarenteed until 12+ wks.

  • She didn't try to date the pregnancy. She just went off my last month period and didn't question it. I do think it is possible that I'm a week behind what the ticker says.. so I'm not too concerned either. And yeah I read that the heartbeat is guaranteed after 12 weeks, so all should be well at my next appoint.
  • How exciting! Congratulations again.  Stinks that you have to wait so long, but at least you will be able to hear the HB at the next appt.

  • That's a bummer you don't have an ultrasound until 20 weeks.  It will go by fast though!

    Congrats again :)
