So...both my car and hubby's cars are off the road. This is the downside to racing your daily drivers. They break a lot.
In the interim our friend has been letting us pimp around his brand new 2010 BMW M5. The thing cost $110K. Sooo, with all the snow and the crazy drivers out last night, we decided that it might be best to leave it overnight in the garage I park in in the city. It's well lit, and I thought manned 24-hours a day. I've walked through there alone at midnight and felt comfortable.
Well last night while I was at Chris's holiday party and the car was sitting in the garage two miles away, safe and sound, some guy in a wheel chair smashed the rear passenger glass, pulled himself in through the window (the doors deadbolt) and proceeded to steal a coat, a box from UPS and some other items. A girl I know, saw him, called the parking manager who ran upstairs and tried to stop the handicapped fellow. Handicapped fellow then proceeded to try to run the parking manager over with his chair. Luckily, he was able to hold on to the thief until the cops came.
I spent the wee hours of this morning in the police station giving a statement and trying to recover all our items before driving home in the freezing cold, with a window out.
Because the car was offered to us by our friend, Chris is getting it all repaired today - to the tune of $1650!!!!!
There goes my extra holiday money!
so..um..yeah. How are you guys doing? I'm actually not pissed at all, just in shock and kinda like, wow, this *** only happens to me. lol
Re: Well I had a shiteous night. How about you?
That is le grand suck. Seriously.
It was madness in town last night, I know a lot of people who left their cars.
Married / The Cookaholic Wife
Wow, that sucks.
Do you think you're going to get reimbursed (by the government or my the handicapped guy) for the cost of the damages?
The Princess of Anything is Coming!
Had a dream I was queen.
Woke up. Still queen.
Damn. Like PP said, see if your friend's car insurance covers it. Mine does, even if someone else is borrowing my car.
But that really is the suck. I'd be drowning my sorrows in a bottle of wine.
well...first of all. Chris just let me know he was messing with me. It will cost $500.
Second, we would rather pay for it ourselves than have our friend have to deal with any of it. It was very kind of him to let of borrow the car. We would hate to further inconvenience him.
Third, yes, we checking to see if maybe the garage is liable. I pay $250 a month to park there. You would think that buys some sort of security.

Well that's good - even though $500 is still a lot, I would probably not get my friend involved in that, either. Definitely pursue the thing with the garage, you never know!

That does suck. I admit though, I laughed at the thought of the guy trying to run someone over with his wheelchair.
I'm glad it's not costing you as much as Chris originally told you!
I would take the wheelchair guy to small claims court to recover the $500. It may be a lost cause since if he was stealing he probably has no money, but I would at least like the victory of it.
The garage may not be liable. I'm sure they have some "we are not responsible for theft..." signs posted to protect themselves in situations such as these. As a courtesy they should be able to compensate you since you pay what I consider to be a huge monthly fee.
I hope all ends well and that you can at least recover some of your money.
yeah, I'm not sure how successful we would be trying to get reimbursed. Chris has a lawyer looking into it right now as a favour. But seriously, especially at this time of year, you have to wonder how much time we want to spend pursuing this.
The thief wasn't homeless per se, he had an address, but the cops said he was pretty dirty and crummy looking. He left the electronic radar detector and stole a coat. I'm pretty sure he won't be able to pay it back. It's also 20F outside and he's dragging himself through windows. It's a bit said. He'll probably spend christmas in jail.
I do agree though and can see the humor in using his wheelchair as a deadly weapon.
