I just read your blog about your trip and all I have to say is:
WELCOME TO MY WORLD!!!!
Seriously, it's a whole nother world down here. Try being a white woman married to a black man in the south. That sh*t ain't fun!! lol
At least in Memphis we have some kickas* food
Re: **AlaskanAlison**
It really is a whole nother world. I was shocked. I seriously wouldn't want to be in your shoes after some of the things I heard people say. And it wasn't just about black people either. They discriminate against everyone.
The woman married to my grandfather is horribly racist. And homophobic. It was awful having to listen to her for an entire week. It seriously was one of my most stressful trips ever. I never want to go back. It might have just been because of the company I kept (I was forced to attend a luncheon for the "Dectaur Culture Club" at the country club....two hours of dealing with snooty racist rich old white ladies. It was horrible) but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth.Part of me never wants to go back, and part of me wants to go back and stay with other people just to see if it really is as bad as I think it is or if it was just because of the people I was around.

Ali go to Texas it is not like the there! Not all the people are like that, but yes some are and it sucks. Cracker Barrel can be good, but it is nothing compared to home cooked southern food. I hope one day you can go visit the south and not feel like they are all total jack arses
Oh and Esther I am so sorry that people still act that way about you and BJ. It makes me so sad.

It's definitely not all of the south that acts like ignorant jerks, but it's definitely more prevelant then one would think. The fact that you encountered stuff like that doesn't surprise me at all. Granted you will find a TON of open minded great people, but in general the south as a whole is about a generation behind the rest of the country when it comes to changing and moving on and progressing.
You should probably go back and visit another area so you don't hate the south forever lol.
I have to agree it is def a different world down here. I grew up in Southeast Kansas. After moving a fews times after college, we landed down here.
It blows my mind that pp act the way they do around here.
