Haha, someone quit work b/c of me

This (LONG) story makes me laugh just because it's so confusing.

I left work after we got married and went back this August.  In the middle of that they hired this girl, Nicole.  I met her when I got back and I thought we hit it off pretty well as coworkers; same political views, interests, etc, so we had things to talk about at work.  I really enjoyed working with her.  She left sometime in the fall (can't recall exactly when) because she's in grad school and it was too much for her to do that and this job, where she was also a key.  She trained me to be a key (ie: floor manager).  I gave her my number and said if she ever had a free minute we should get coffee or something.

The semester ends and she's coming back to work during her break.  Her first night was this past Thursday, when I was working and two other people.  Again, thought things went well, nothing out of the ordinary, we chatted a bit, it's all good.

When the manager told me this story today, she said that Nicole had talked to her a little before the time she left for school and said she was having some problems with me.  The manager asked her what the problems were and she said "just some specific things."  So manager asks her, "What specific things?"  Well, apparently I was "refusing" to vacuum and take out the garbage.  And the manager was like, well I haven't had any problems with her.  At that time she talked to the two assistant managers who said they also had no problems with me.

So anyway, we worked together Thursday and she up and quit Friday! One of the other keys called in sick so they called Nicole to see if she could come in.  It was 1:30-ish, the store was packed, the manager was on the phone with Nicole and Nicole says she wants her to change the schedule so she doesn't have to work with me because I was doing the same things again.  The garbage and the vacuuming thing!  Our poor manager does the schedule eleventybillion times because people are always whining about their hours and it's two freaking weeks until Christmas.  So she's on the phone, store buzzing all around her and she tells Nicole, either you suck it up and work with Sandra, or you don't come back.  Long story short, Nicole quit.

Here's the weird part - no one else has this complaint about me because I frequently take out the garbage, and I always vacuum when it's my turn!  Thursday night I distinctly remember taking some garbage from the front of the store to the back.  What petty things to quit over, even if they were true.  And why she couldn't say anything to ME in the first place is beyond me.  I don't know if maybe she was using me as a scapegoat for something?

We were joking about it all night tonight because it was just weird.

That's what I was thinking as well.. You definitely don't seem like the type of person who wouldn't do your job, so it doesn't make sense to me!

Someone quit because of me once! haha I worked in a municipal office for about 5 years as a clerk, while I was in college, and there were 4 of us that we're seasonal. Once, we had this girl volunteering with us because her father thought it would be good for her (he was the director/doctor in the health dept..she was a 15 year old spoiled princess). Everyone in our office hated her, and didn't want to work with her.

We had this really boring job of doing these things called marginals, and we would all take shifts, but since she couldn't do all the other stuff, we made her do marginals all day, but the 4 of us would shift.

The other girls would talk with her, even though they didn't like her, but if I don't like you, I'm not going to talk to you. So, when it was the two of us in the vault (yes, this massive bank vault), it would be pretty much silent.

She quit because I was mean. Whatever biotch, you're a spoiled brat. haha

Everyone joked about that for a while, but everyone was happy haha.

Woooow that sound absolutely ridiculous!  People make the most ridiculous things up.  Maybe she hated the job and was trying to find some reason to quit that wouldn't look bad on her?  Which IMHO it does look bad to quit because you're having imaginary problems with someone.  Some people...I swear!  It is rather funny though.

    Too funny melko!

  • lol that's funny! I'm glad you didn't get written up because of her accusations, but it's amazing how far some people will take things.

I don't think we write people up for stuff.  But yeah, everyone else at the store is 100% with me - they just don't get it, haha.  My manager even told her when they were talking that when I go to work "I do WORK."  That made me smile.

I've made plenty of people quit, and even fired plenty of people (Embarrassed)...but nothing this off the wall!
