easy Arts and Crafts for a one year old?

Where are my pre-school teachers/kindergarten experts?  I need a few arts and craft ideas for Abby to make.  I forgot that she should probably give a little something to her loved ones, too :-)

Re: easy Arts and Crafts for a one year old?

  • At a year old I think Helen was still eating crayons.  Even now she can only be trusted with crayons and stickers.  I let her use a glue stick recently and she tried to smear it everywhere.  The cards Helen is giving her relatives this year were made entirely by me (I gave up on her helping after the glue stick incident).

  • First thought is that you will have the best luck with a controlled hand print project. Paint her hand, hang on to it, stamp it where you want it, and then wash her hand off, decorate yourself. Foot print project is also a way to go.

the third graders made these this year - really cute, but better for kids older than 1 - keep it in mind for another year. Have kid grab Christmas ball with painted hand and then paint into snowmen when dry.

My toddler book is at the neighbors' house right now, or I would look up some more ideas.

Maybe you could do Abby made wrapping paper with ice cube painting and maybe add hand prints when dry. Wrap up a picture of her with the paper.

freeze sticks in ice cubes with food coloring, Abby moves the ice around, ice melts, color gets on paper.

contact paper collage? Abby tears Christmas-y paper, sticks it to contact paper, you fold over. Use tissue paper and it is a sun catcher (hole punch top and add ribbon).

But yeah, MF is right, it will mostly be made by you at Abby's age, especially if you want it to look like something and not just be a creative expression.

  • Thanks!  I think I'm going to try the Santa handprint card with Ben :)
  • Luke is very gifted and printed a picture of himself with all his special people and framed them.... oh wait that was me ;)

  • My sister did the handprint Santa with my niece and it turned out great!  (Granted, my niece is 3.5, but still...)  She bought a plain canvas from Michael's and painted it a bright aqua color, then had Kate stamp her hand on the canvas.  She used foam stickers for the rest instead of painting it.  It's really cute, and because it's on the canvas, it's a permanent Christmas decoration.

Owen's daycare had him do really simple stuff.  They had balsa wood snowmen ornaments that the kids painted and pre-cut tree shapes (on construction paper) that they let the kids color with glitter paint and glue on cheerios for decorations (again, you could use foam stickers).

Check out Family Fun magazine -- they always have great ideas!

    ACTIVITIES FOR TODDLERS

    • Toddlers like to put things inside of other things and dump them out. Cut a hole in the middle of the lid of a clean coffee can or plastic margarine tub. Let the toddlers put clothespins, thread spools, and big hair curlers through the hole.
    • Make play dough. Mix 3 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 3 tablespoons oil, and 1 cup water together. Add food coloring for color. Let the toddlers use jar lids, clothespins, and popsicle sticks to cut and shape the play dough.
    • Children love to play with water. Fill big buckets or tubs with water. Give the children soap chips, measuring spoons and cups, plastic bottles, butter tubs, and sponges to play with in the water. Put towels or newspaper on the floor so the children will not slip on the wet floor.
    • Toddlers like goop. Mix cornstarch and water together. Let toddlers play with it in a bucket or in bowls with cups and spoons. Make the goop thick or thin.
    • Ask your local appliance shop for a free refrigerator (or other large appliance) cardboard box. Cut doors and windows in the box to make a playhouse. Toddlers can draw on it with crayons or "paint" it with water and big brushes or sponges.
    • Toddlers like to draw with short, fat, unwrapped crayons. Give them paper bags (you can tear them open to make large sheets of brown paper) or large pieces of heavy paper to draw on. To help them draw, tape the paper down so it does not move.
    • Let toddlers tear old wrapping paper. Then have them paste the pieces to make a collage.
    • Have toddlers finger paint with shaving cream mixed with food coloring. They like this mess.
    • Toddlers like to jump. Put pillows, cushions, or a mattress on the floor.
    • They can use some swings and low slides at the playground.
    • Most toddlers are just learning how to walk and run. Go for lots of walks.
    • Let the toddlers practice climbing stairs with your help.
    • Toddlers also like to play house with dolls and housekeeping props such as plastic dishes and spoons.

  • We are big fans of the foam stickers, but I think for a 1yr old you would have to do a lot of the work. i.e. Peeling off the back, holding hand and helping little one stick it...

Last year I painted a picture of a christmas tree and had Brielle use a q-tip to make dots on the tree, thus she "decorated it". You could do a variation of this and MM's idea with the canvas'. Oh, we also did the cinnamon ornaments last year. They do take some time to dry but they smell great and I think you can speed up the process in the oven. Brielle "helped" use the cookie cutters and cut out the ornament shapes....I recommend buying your cinnamon in bulk containers at Sam's Club. It takes a lot of cinnamon...

  • If you mix plain yogurt with food coloring little ones can finger paint without the worry of them eating it because they can!
