Stupid question.  (You can totally point and laugh at me if you want. :-)) I've never cooked a ham before, so I'm not sure whether I need to find an uncooked ham, or if I can use a pre-cooked one for that sangria ham recipe you posted last week?  I went to the grocery store last night and when I couldn't find any uncooked hams, I was really confused.  HALP.

Based on the amount of time you're letting it in the juice/basting it, I'd suggest an uncooked ham...We usually do cooked hams & cover them with brown suger & pineapple, but we only heat it up rather than full-on cooking it...so it's only in the heat for about 30 minutes total...Did you try the butcher counter @ your grocery store?  Or else a farmers' market if you have one handy.  Most of the hams I see in the regular cases are usually cooked, too...

That's kinda what I thought, too.  I tried the butcher's counter and the guy back there actually told me that he's been looking all over for an uncooked ham for himself and can't find them anywhere.  *sigh*  Maybe I'll have to find another recipe. :-(

  • Why am I always late to my own pages?

Its fine to use a cooked ham. I've never managed to find an uncooked one. I'm making the sangria one this time too and I just plan on scoring the ham and soaking it in the sangria/pineapple juice mixture for a couple hours (3-4 hours for a 7 lb. ham is what I'm doing) since the ham for just H and I is too small to put in our huge roaster pan.

Just follow the cooking directions on the ham and you'll be good to go.

edited for clarity. and again because I can't remember to post everything at once.

  • Ok, thanks. :-)  I was just afraid that a lot of the hams are smoked - not sure if that will affect the taste.  I guess I'll try to find one that hasn't been smoked and hope for the best.
