update on our dog

well, they said everything went really well with Taylor's surgery yesterday but he's in really rough shape.

he's super groggy from the drugs and he can't stand or walk at all. which, of course, he doesn't understand so he keeps trying to.

last night, he wouldn't drink any water but ate some food. (we only fed him a little at the vets suggestion to avoid vomiting).

during the night, i woke up to him panting so i got up and go him a small bowl of water. he took some drinks but continued the panting. lars got up and tried to take him out to potty, which he wouldn't do.

when he tries to potty, we have to loop a towel under his chest and hoist him up into a somewhat standing position, but his hindlegs are largely immobile so he doesn't want to potty. he ended up peeing in his dog bed and then when lars took him out again, he pottied some and lars thought he was done but he then peed all over  himself and lars. : (

poor pup.

he also split 1 of his staples open and messed up his bandage so lars had to take him to the vet to get fixed up again this morning.

I think this is going to be a long long healing process. : (

  • Oh, poor puppy. After Bijou had her major dental surgery and we brought her home she was up panting a lot too. We were in touch with the vet (at 2am) when it was all happening and she said it is a side effect of coming of the pain drugs they gave her. Bijou was on morphine. Maybe that's why all the panting?  So scary though. Have you heard of a belly band? Maybe you could put that on him during this first week so if he has to go potty he can just go in that and not have to worry about taking him out in the cold or peeing on himself. Make sure to use the bladder control pads in the band like the Poise brand so they can hold it all.

  • Oh, poor Taylor puppy!!!

Lars must really love him to do all of that - presumably without complaint? Wink I hope he (the pooch) pulls through this and is quickly back to his adorable doggy self!

  • Poor guy!  FWIW, my friend's dog had the patella surgery a year and a half ago, so both hind legs were in casts, and the first night was by far the worst.  Very similar to what you've described.  But within a day or so he was walking on the casts, and the improvement was quick in terms of adjustment to the casts.  The recovery was still long with physical therapy and such, but the horrific nature of the first day/night passed quickly.  I hope the same is true for you guys.

  • Poor guy! They are so sad after big surgeries like that.

Are you leaving his e-collar on all the time?  It is pretty big, it may help him to eat, drink and go potty if you take it off for those times.

Panting can be a sign of pain, let your vet know if it continues.  They may recommend an additional pain medication.

If you use the belly band and urine pad be sure to wipe his belly down with warm water at every pad change.  They can get urine scald if the area is not kept clean.

Good luck, I hope he starts to feel better soon!

Here's one they sell at Petsmart. You could call ahead to Petco or Petsmart but they usually sell them at the store.  I agree with Molly about wiping the area if they do pee in the pad. We used a girl panty and Poise pad for Bijou for over a year and she never had any rash or marks from the pad because we were super careful of keeping the area clean with a warm cloth and soap if she peed.

Do you sew? They are really easy to make yourself. Just measure how wide the waist is and sew a wide "belt" out of flannel with velcro. The adhesive from the pad will stick to the band. I know many people who use the belly bands for male dogs that have marking issues too and it works great. If you PM his measurement around his waist I could sew a couple and put them in the mail for you.
