Christmas Food Poll

I'm talking non-alchoholic on this one...[Poll]

Re: Christmas Food Poll

  • I don't think I've ever had eggnog.  Embarrassed

Surprise  You should pick some up on your way home today.  If you do, C.F. Burger brand is the best IMO.  And don't get low fat your first time trying it.

  • OK, what should I do? Only 4 of the 10 people like egg nog and one of those people is me. Everyone else is bringing in a dessert too so it is not like mine is the only dessert. I really want to try it! Should I still bring it in made with egg nog? I could substitute the egg nog with milk but to me that's not keepin' it real.
  • Not an eggnog fan here, but what if you just didn't tell them that there was eggnog in it?  Just say it's a trifle.  Big Smile

Good point.  Of course I already mentioned it so now it is too late :-).  Oh well, DH wanted to try it too so I will at least have some to bring home!

  • One thing I've learned (the hard way) when it comes to bringing food to work...don't do anything too exotic.  People generally enjoy classic simple desserts/foods.  If it looks or sounds too crazy, you'll get a good number of people who won't even try it and you'll be taking home all of the leftovers.  In most of the dessert contests we've had here at work, simple and classic desserts usually win.

Cut the recipe in half (if you have another nice dish to display the dessert in), that way you aren't bringing home 16 servings of it if no one is willing to try it.

Honestly, I don't care for eggnog at all, but for the amount that is actually going in it along with the other ingredients, I just don't think it'll be that noticeable or over-powering.  It actually sounds like a tasty, holiday dessert.  I'm curious to see what you think of it.

Actually, from reading the comments on it, I might do two cups egg nog with 1 cup milk to help out with that.  I love the idea of the combo of gingerbread & eggnog so was intrigued.  I will let you guys know!

That's a good point.  But, I didn't think it was that exotic at the time until it hit me about the eggnog.  I have a hard time just making something like choc chip cookies.  I always have to have something unique going.  Oh well :-)

  • I am not an eggnog fan (at all) but that would not stop me from at least trying your dessert.  Go for it.  :)
  • I LOVE eggnog flavored treats - I just dont' like to drink a glass of egg nog - it's too thick for me.

I made egg nog cupcakes last year, and they were a hit.

I agree with this. Like Laura, I can't stomach even the thought of egg nog because it is just SO THICK and that is not a pleasant thing for me to drink. But I'd be curious how its taste would translate to a dessert.

  • I sampled and it was good!  There is also whipped cream that is a layer and it dilutes the egg nog so it isn't a full blow of egg nog.  The taste is still there though.  It is supposed to sit overnight so wonder what it will taste like tomorrow when everything is set...
  • I don't care for egg nog, but again because of the texture.  If there were other things in there like cake and whipped cream and such, I don't think it'd bother me.  I can't eat pudding or custard plain (I gag) but I love it with cake or something else incorporated.

Of course, I still couldn't have this because of the gluten in the cake, but I'd try it if it were presented to me in a gluten free version.

  • How did it go?  Was it a hit?
  • I would say about 50% of it was gone by the end of the day.  The kids LOVED it and so did DH.  I thought it was great and perfect for the holidays.  I used 2 cups egg nog and 1 cup milk to lighten the egg nog taste because some of the people on allrecipes said it was strong.  I would definitely recommend this one!
