Just witnessed a shoplifter

at the family dollar in North Providence.

Legit this guy had a ski jacket FULL  of sh!t.  My friend and I were in the checkout lane and see this guy sprint by us, through the door, knocking over a lady coming into the store, the alarm went off, he ran to his car and sped away.

The cashier was the only one there so said "well theres nothing i can do about it"  (the store was packed, so she couldn't leave her post)

The owner of the store next door came in and gave us his license plate, so my friend and I later called the po-po just to give them a heads up (it made us feel better).

The cop says "well Family dollar hasnt reported it yet so maybe he didnt shop lift"  yes officer...actually i'm lying (sarcasm, if you couldnt tell)

Lazy a$$ mother f-er.  Seriously....i know its just family dollar, and i know its just shoplifting (not a "robbery" per se) but i gave you his license...all you have to do is type in his name and he'll come up.  whatevs!

just thought i'd share!

Re: Just witnessed a shoplifter

  • I have a friend who is a manager at an Express and we were talking about this one day.

they are not allowed to do anything if someone shoplifts.  I could literally go into the store, pick up a pair of pants, walk out the door with them and they would just let me go...unless there is a security person who happens to be walking by the front of the store at the time.  If there is they can get them to chase me down.

I wonder if that is the same thing at Family Dollar.  Just not allowed to do anything about it due their own safety etc....

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • yeah i get why she couldnt do anything, but what i dont get is why the cop couldnt?! i mean there were at least 10 witnesses!

but that is crazy about express! I bet there have been a lot of shoplifters at forever21 b/c i always see security guards when I walk by!

  • While it sucks..

most stores value the safety of their employees, so for instance.. we'd have to physically SEE the person take the stuff and then walk out past the cobblestones in front of the store.  we can only get their license plate and we aren't allowed to say anything but "do you need help with anything?".

who knows if looney man had a weapon or was off his rocker..  you just don't know, sadly.

    sucks.

  • yeah, i should reword my original post...b/c i meant that the cop was lazy....not the lady.  i know there was nothing she could have done! and you never want to risk ones safety.

just the cop on the phone was like "well it wasnt called in, so maybe it didnt happen" then said "we'll look into it" and hung up.  very as$hole-ish.

  • after i typed my response and saw your response..

    YES,

now I get it.  what a douchecanoe.

This is the 3rd time on this board in recent months that I've read a post regarding a cop being "lazy" and so affectionately referenced by the OP as a "lazy a$$ mother f-er", so I think it's time I speak up.

I'm sorry you feel that way, Jessica, but realistically running the plate doesn't guarentee they'll catch the guy (interesting that you saved your insults for the an authority of the law, and not the scum bag who shop lifted.) Things in real life don't play out like they do on Law and Order, or CSI, sweetheart. There is a good chance that the plate was probably lifted...*gasp* there goes your lead.

The truth is, unless Family Dollar calls the police and chooses to prosecute, there is nothing the police can do. Also, calls for shoplifting take a back burner to more serious crimes like robbery and breaking and entering, etc. You don't know what calls were being called in and what officers were dispatched to at the time (I guarantee that contrary to belief, most officers don't sit at DD eating donuts and drinking coffee their entire shift.) As a citizen, I would want the police to respond to a more serious call, rather than to a shoplifting call by a witness that hadn't been reported by the "victim" yet.

Don't get me wrong, there is good and bad in every profession, but as someone who has a family member who is an officer and has to deal with the scrutiny and dangers in their profession, the generalization and label of "lazy" or a "mother f-er" really pisses me off.

well "sweetheart" you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine AND this is coming from someone whose brother is a state trooper...who I actually called after the incident and who actually called the police officer lazy himself.

so thank you for your opinion, but I was not saying ALL cops are lazy, just this one.  get off your soap box.

  • I really don't think Jess meant anything by it Suzanne.

  • Being the sister of a "State Trooper", I would hope that your brother explained how calls are answered instead of just stating that the "officer" was lazy. Even if "the officer" did pull the plate, that's info he wouldn't be sharing with the public. I'm willing to bet that you were speaking to a dispatcher, not an officer. Regardless, I stand by what I said in my response.

As for the 'soap box' comment, look who's talking?!?! You're the one who is upset that you called the "po-po to give them a heads up", and that the entire dept didn't throw on their capes and sirens and respond to the call. Really, what did you expect to happen?  Call it a "hunch", but perhaps a call was never put in by an employee of Family Dollar? Even still, I'm sure a car was dispatched and that Family Dollar will not be pressing charges (assuming they even got a positive hit on the plate.)

Pam - Whether she meant something or not, I have no regrets responding to this. She used some pretty strong language, and I expressed how I felt. (For the record, I have respect for those who serve the public and I'd feel this way even if I didn't have a family member in the field.) I'm hardly on the board as it is, so I'm not going to turn this into a pissing match or a popularity contest. Like the OP said, she has her opinion which she is entitled to, as am I.

  • i'm sorry my language offended you.  I'm hoping that if you knew me IRL, you would know i didnt mean anything by it.  the "po-po" comment was meant to be read in a joking manner and yes, i swear like a trucker.  But that does not mean I dont have respect for police officers or those who serve the public.

the facts: a) someone stole a lot of merchandise from this store b) i called the police immediately after the incident b/c the woman who was alone at the register could not leave her post, so your "hunch" was correct (if u read the OP you would know that it had not been called in yet).  c) the police officer tried to tell me "well maybe it didnt happen then" then proceeded to hang up on me after saying "we'll look into it"

in your responses you bring up a lot of hypothetical situations as well (there could have been a more important call,it could have been fake plates, family dollar may not press charges, etc) i fully understand this and was not expecting some officer to come to my rescue with capes and sirens as you dramatically put it, but it did not feel right not to call it in.  and to be told that "maybe it didnt happen?" really? how can you not see that as just ignoring the incident?

i dont watch law and order and csi. i wasnt expecting anything huge. i was reporting an incident and sharing my story on the nest.  I will delete it if it offends you so much.  But what offends me so much is that I stay away from this nest drama.  I did not post the first two postings that you say referred to cops as being lazy, so unfortunately i have to be the one you take your anger out on.  Its just unfortunate b/c i really hate offending people and this post was not meant to be offensive.

  • Jessica, I appreciate the apology and anyone who knows me in real life knows me to be the same way. I by no means am a Saint, and I swear with the best of them! I try to avoid drama, and by taking the time to re-read the posts and process them, I realized that I was being pretty dramatic. (Go figure!?!?)

I did not mean to take my anger out on you, I apologize for that. It's not just things that were said on the board in previous posts, I think it's just been the abundance of comments that I've heard about cops. I too, hate to offend people and find that often times I hold in my feelings or thoughts because I do not want to cause conflict. Tonight, I did the opposite and even though I do not regret it, I think I could have handled it differently. It's obvious that I need to have a "thicker skin" when it comes to anything related to those in the field.

I do not know you IRL, and I misunderstood what you were really trying to say in the thread because it was not face to face.  Please do not delete this post. I think we have both said our peace, and that I now understand where you were coming from, I can understand your frustration. Again, I apologize for any drama, confusion or attack and hope that we can move past this incident.

I'm glad that you did call the incident in to the police, many people would not have taken the time to do so.  Thank you for that.

  • For the record if there is a pissing and popularity contest, can I be a judge?  I've won them enough times, I don't need the glory!

    I JEST, I JEST!!!  SMOOCHES!
