DINK?

Has anyone heard this term before? DINK (double income, no kids). I got called that this weekend by my SIL. Christian and I were talking about our next vacation and she was like gosh, it must be so nice to be a DINK. I was like huh?

Not sure if she was trying to be a smartas$ or just saying b/c that they can not take vacations as much b/c they have children. Guess I was just kinda thrown off by that comment. Anyone else been referred to as this?

Re: DINK?

  • Never heard of it. But I'm a DINK too and it is awfully nice. However, sounds like your SIL was taking a shot at you. Ridiculous, since they chose to have children.
  • Yes, it's a term from the 80's.
  • It's ironic that you wrote this because at DH work xmas party last week someone called us this. Personally I didn't take offense to it... so what we are choosing to not have kids yet we are young, and so what we both work and have good jobs. We have a lot of time and money invested into our educations to get the good paying jobs that we have right now.

  • A few weeks ago they had a whole conversation about DINKS on the radio and had people calling in about the topic. I never heard the term before until then!
  • I've never heard that term before. I do have a friend that constantly talks about the difference between her friends with kids and friends without on facebook. It really ticks me off but I just ignore it because I know she's trying to get reactions out of people.  They chose to have a child right after they got married and thats great, I love their daughter, but we're choosing not to have one for a few years.  I hate when she says "my friends without kids just don't understand, I feel like they ditch us all the time because of our daughter."  No, we don't, we never have.  We don't call hardly at all  because of all the stupid BS you put on FB.

  • I took an urban development class in college and the professor used the term to describe a certain family/household, as in you have a high population of DINKs in cities or urban areas, then they move to suburban areas, etc., which effects planning, etc. It wasn' used in a derogatory or non-derogatory way - just as a way to describe married couples with two incomes that did not have children.

I think your SIL was saying it in a not so nice way - which as Jenni pointed out, is annoying since she chose to have the children she has.

  • yes, this term is used a lot in nyc. most of my social circle are DINKS and i'm one of the first few in my nyc circle of 30-somethings to have kids while my friends back home in ohio of the same age have 3 or 4 kids already. the concept of DINKS makes me think of the couple in the movie 4 Christmases.

  • So if you have children are you a DIK? Or one income would be SIK. Both of these crack me up.
  • I learned this term in grade 6 by the French teacher since she was one and proud of it.
