I need on-the-go food ideas

Next semester there will be 3 days a week that I am not home for lunch or dinner, due to work and classes.

I need some ideas on what I can buy or make to bring me with so I don't end up eating out all those times.

What have ya got for me? :)

Re: I need on-the-go food ideas

  • Will you have access to a microwave and/or fridge throughout the day? I didn't when I took classes and I found it nearly impossible to bring food without it getting messed up. I also took public transit so my book bag wasn't a great place to carry stuff without it spilling or getting smashed. It was too hard to carry another bag. If you're driving that might be easier. I bought my food on campus where at least it was cheaper and in my case, good.
  • Assuming you don't have access to a fridge or microwave... My first thought was homemade salads of various types. Lettuce-based ones with various toppings, with a small sandwich and a piece of fruit is a good lunch. You can also make pasta salads with different veggies, cheeses, cut up chicken or turkey, etc. for a filling dinner.

If you do have access to a fridge/microwave, it gets easier. Just look up some recipes for freezable dinners (we can make some suggestions here too), cook a bunch and freeze in individual portions so you can just grab one and go.

  • I have been packing snack-type lunches at my new job. I bring two different fruits (grapes and pears, right now), a veggie (sliced bell pepper), about an ounce of a good cheese, a slice of meat (proscuitto right now), a serving of something sweet (Trader Joe's Triple Ginger Snaps), some fruit-and-nut trail mix and a Diet Pepsi.

Since it's not a "lunch lunch," I can dig into it whenever I'm hungry throughout the day. So far, I've enjoyed it. I'm looking to get one of those bento-style lunchboxes in the new year.  GL!

  • Oh I totally forgot to mention that no, I will have no way to warm things up or keep them cold.

Hannah-you're spot on. I will be taking public transit 2 days a week and it's a really long day so I probably don't want to be packing around a great big lunch box. The other day I will have my car.

I was thinking salads but then on that potluck post someone said the most common thing to get food poisoning from is vegetables.  Is that likely to happen if my salad is unrefrigerated all day? Hmm..

Thanks for the ideas so far. I was hoping to get a good idea of what I need before I go grocery shopping and try to figure this out.

  • Well, if you're going to bring a lunch bag I would get one that has the cold pack insulation. That will keep things colder. You don't want things like salad dressing to leak onto your books and stuff.

That was me! As long as you are careful about washing your veggies, you'll be fine. its just cross contamination that causes the food poisoning b/c veggies aren't cooked, but it won't happen b/c your lettuce is unrefrigerated for a few hours.

i would recommend getting a small insulated lunch pack and freezer packs that you can put in them each day, and pack cheese, peanut butter, nuts/trail mix. basically, you want high calorie stuff so it keeps you full longer. even luna bars or clif bars or something like that will be great.

also, see if your school has lockers you can use for the semester. i know that at both uc davis and sac state there are lockers available for rent in certain departments for the semester. if you're going to be close to one location on campus for a majority of the day, this might be a good idea, then you won't have to worry about carrying the lunch bag around all day, and you can stock the locker with non perishable snacks.

Great idea! I have seen lockers on campus! I need to figure out how to get one! Thanks!
