Christmas Eve food ideas?

DH and I were going to go to Dallas for Christmas and see his mom and spend time with my family. Unfortunately, we just yesterday found out he has to work Monday, so we're not going to go. My parents rock, and they decided to come up to OKC instead for Christmas... which means suddenly it's at my house! Eek!

I think Christmas dinner is covered: My mom is bringing up a prime rib she already bought, and we'll do au gratin potatoes and a few other sides. But for Christmas Eve, I'm stumped! I know I'll make Swedish meatballs because that's a tradition, but what else can I make? We usually do finger foods and appetizers, some warm and some cold. Do you have any good suggestions?

I also need to figure out snacks and desserts! I'll make cookies and Chex mix... but crap! What else can I do?

Re: Christmas Eve food ideas?

  • I'm glad you posted this! I need some Christmas Eve food ideas too.

Puppy Chow is always a hit (if you make it, make sure you use plenty of powdered sugar! That's what makes it delicious!), lil smokies wrapped in Crescent rolls, chocolate covered pretzels.

  • You can't go wrong with the standards- cheese and crackers and a veggie tray. Shrimp are always a hit at our family Christmas parties. For hot food, Tyson has bite-size buffalo chicken pieces that are quite tasty. I buy them at Crest for about $6/bag.

For desserts, I love lemon bars or brownies!

  • You could do:

mini sandwiches, dips and veggies or chips, tortilla roll ups, little smokies (in bbq sauce done int he crock pot), stuffed mushrooms, maybe make some chili...

  • I agree with the shrimp, you could do buffalo wings, mini quiche (they have these at sam's already made, you just put them in the oven. yum!) They also have tortilla rollups at sam's already made as well.
  • Those little sandwiches that Heather makes are really good, buffalo wings, cheese and crackers, bbq little smokies, pigs in a blanket, tortilla pinwheels, artichoke/spinach dip and chips, chips and salsa/queso, buffalo chicken dip, puppy chow, Oreo truffles...I'm sure I can think of some more stuff later lol.

Oooh, what are Oreo truffles? Those sound tasty!

We do the same thing for Christmas Eve...lots of snacky finger foods. This year I'm bringing 7 layer dip. We also have chicken wings, pigs in a blanket, a giant sugar cookie with fruit on it (to look like a pizza, sort of), regular cookies, chips, and I know I'm forgetting a lot of other things. 7 layer dip is pretty easy if you want to do that.

Oreo truffles are super easy and super delish!
  • Sorry that's not clicky, oops.
  • Oh! I thought of something else.

Someone brought these little pepperoni/cream cheese crescent roll things to food day at work and everyone loved them. I think all you do is put a pepperoni and a little bit of cream cheese in the crescent rolls, roll them up, bake until they brown.

  • We're having a family gathering here for Christmas Eve.  The majority of attendants are actually vegetarians, so I'm just making everything veggie - I might buy some summer sausage to go with the cheese.

We are having: "sausage" dip with cream cheese and rotel, a veggie tray, hummus with pita bread, cheese and crackers (possibly with the summer sausage as well), and fried eggplant.  I'm also going to have a tray of cookies and my dad is bringing tabbouleh.

My sister is as well. We used to have a more meat-heavy buffet, but now we have more vegetables and meatless options. That dip you mentioned sounds good - we're always on the lookout for new vegetarian items!

  • Stuff Mushrooms. I added crab. It was good.

Polish Mistakes. Rye bread topped with velvetta, sausage. I garnish with a slide of green olive.

I don't have a recipe but I put cresent roll dough in mini muffin tins and add brie and rasberry seedless jam.

Fruit dip. Haven't made it but it gets good reviews.

I can't find the recipe, but I made a recipe on All Recipes that was cream cheese, mayo, cheddar cheese, green chiles, and jalapenos. It was really good and easy. Just mix and microwave for 2 minutes.

  • Oreo truffles are good too.

I always make pierogies for Christmas Eve. Dough with cheesy potatoes inside and topped with butter and onions. I just made a 10 minute version - boiled a lasagna noodle that I later cut into thirds and small potato. Mashed the potato with cheesy and butter. Alternated layers of noodle with potato mixture in a ramekin. Topped with butter and onions.

It is really good and really easy!  Last year when I first made it, the big meat eater in the family (my dad) said he wouldn't have known it wasn't really sausage if I hadn't told him.  I use the Gimme Lean sausage style stuff by Lightlife.  It comes in a tube just like regular sausage.  You can get it at probably any health food store and possibly also at Wal-mart.  I know they have some of the Lightlife stuff, but I'm not for sure on if they have the "sausage."  You just brown the "sausage" and mix it in a crockpot with two bricks of cream cheese and a drained can of Rotel.

  • Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

It is seriously the most wonderful thing ever.  It is a dessert and I usually serve it will teddy grahams.  You can use any kind of graham cracker cookie.
